i37100 or i5+

Building my first PC, have upgraded a few here and there but first from scratch build. Not a Heavy everyday PC user only use it for kids research, media, and mmo gaming. On a budget so I was going with a core i3 7100 all reviews I read are good and seem to be what i'm looking for. Question is should spend the extra money on an i5 or i7? Thanks for any help.

It really depends on everything else. If upgrading to the i5 means you have to cut back elsewhere in the build, it may not be worth it. For example, the i3 + GTX1060 would be a much better gaming combo than an i5 + GTX1050ti while being about the same price. If you can get the i5 without cutting back on something else, do it because it would be a good investment IMO.

The motherboard I'm going with is a gigabyte z270mx gaming 5 and I am going to be using a gigabyte 7950hd that I have in my current PC. Old PC has been upgraded here and there but it is a HP elite on it's last leg but it had a good 12 year run. Just wanted a PC I built that I could modify/upgrade as needed. Any tips and tricks are welcome. My parts are compatible and on their way. Wish me luck
