I have just purchased an i4790K to replace the i4770 and upgraded the BIOS to version F8 so that it is recognises the 4790K (and it does). Motherboard is Gigabyte GA-H87M-HD3 with BIOS version F8.
I am using the stock Intel E97379-001 heatsink and fan and used ARCTIC MX-2 thermal compound.
I am using CORE TEMP version 1.14 to monitor the temperature of each core and at idle the temperature for each core is under 30C (90F) but when I use X-PLANE the temperature of each core gets to 90C+ and as I have the BIOS set to warn when the CPU temperature goes over 90C I hear a noise.

What can I do to fix this as I understood that the stock heat sink/fan was ok when the i4790K is not overclocked.

I used about a pea sized amount of thermal compound during installaition after looking this up on the internet. Could I have used too much? What happens when too much compound is used?

Solution
i have done the same upgrade not too long ago, the i7 4790(k) is a hot chip, google around
that intel stock cooler will not keep it cooled properly, even with my enermax t40 i sometimes have spikes close to 90 degrees during gaming

so upgrade that cooler
