Question i5-10600K with RX 6950 XT will work?

Hello,

My current system is:

• CPU: i5-10600K
• Memory: 64 GB DDR4 2666Mhz
• GPU: RX 580
• MB: Gigabyte H410M S2H
• PSU: Corsair 750W (modular)

On this system I play these video games in 1920x1080@60 Low:

• Dead by Daylight
• Elite Dangerous
• Fall Guys
• Fortnite
• No Man's Sky
• Rocket League
• Rogue Company
• Stellaris

I am also able to capture my video games with OBS.

Sometimes, I am under 60 FPS but most of the time it is 60 FPS so it is playable.

I tried one day to upgrade my GPU from RX 580 to RX 6600 XT and I got unexpected results.
Often, I was under 60 FPS so it was unplayable.
I returned my RX 6600 XT and went back to my good old RX 580 with better performances.

Now, I would like to upgrade my GPU from RX 580 to RX 6950 XT.
The purpose of this new system is to play the video games above in 1920x1080@60 Ultra.
I also would like to capture my video games with OBS.

Do you think it will work? Please tell me why.

I would like to upgrade my GPU from RX 580 to RX 6950 XT

you will need at very least a very high quality 850w power supply.
many of these models even require up to 1000w minimum.

you will need to check the minimum requirements for the specific model that you choose and upgrade your PSU to accommodate.

The 6950 XT is only consuming 340 W:

That's why I think my Corsair 750 W PSU should do the job.
The "recommended PSU" from the manufacturer is always too much for the graphics card.
I don't think my system can use more than 750 W.
How do you calculate please?

Which Corsair 750W?

More to a power supply then its power rating. In the case of late model GPUs you have to be cautious of power spikes tripping the over current protection on some power supplies.

I would say a Corsair RM750 or RM750x would be alright. Older HX and TX might not be good but more recent ones should also be alright.

This is mostly true, however, many cards experience transient spikes in power consumption. LTT measured a spike of 462 watts on the 6900 XT. I have a 6900 XT (a 300-watt card) and am using a 750-watt PSU. It has been running fine, but I have been wondering if I should upgrade the PSU. It's probably fine, but something to keep in mind.

I am lucky because my PSU is exactly Corsair RM750.
So I will try and see.

A 6950xt is a total waste for gaming @ 1080p/60fps low!!

The 6600xt should've been quite a noticeable jump in performance. Did you remove the old drivers?

Save hundreds and go with a lower spec'd card.

I know that the 6600 XT should be enough but it was not.
Indeed, I installed the last driver and used the AMD cleanup utility before that.

Also, I just received and installed the 6950 XT and I got the same problems as with the 6600 XT.
Often, on Fortnite, I am under 60 FPS so it is unplayable, with settings: 1920x1080@60 Low and driver "whql-amd-software-adrenalin-edition-22.11.2-win10-win11-dec8.exe".
I will probably return my RX 6950 XT and go back to my good old RX 580 with better performances.

On Dead by Daylight with 6600 XT I had some frame drops too.
With 6950 XT, same problem.
Whereas with RX 580 it's fine.

In fact, to summarize:

• RX 580 DBD 1920x1080@60Ultra no frame drops
• RX 580 FN 1920x1080@60Low no frame drops
• RX 6600 XT DBD 1920x1080@60Ultra frame drops
• RX 6600 XT FN 1920x1080@60Low frame drops
• RX 6950 XT DBD 1920x1080@60Ultra frame drops
• RX 6950 XT FN 1920x1080@60Low frame drops

I think maybe these games are not optimized for the 6000 series.

However, I recognize that if I set everything to Ultra in Fortnite, I will get better performances on 6950 XT than on RX 580 with Ultra settings.
Better, but never 60 FPS stable.
So, if I want 60 FPS stable (no frame drops), and that's what I want, I have no choice but to stay on my RX 580 with Low settings.

My guess is that FN and DBD are games that are compiling shaders at runtime.
So, when I change the graphics card, all the shaders are recompiled and I lose FPS during the first hours of game.
Playing during a long time without changing the graphics card or updating drivers may help to improve performances.
Indeed, the compiled shaders will remain in cache so when I launch the game later they will not be recompiled.
