I plan on upgrading my computer within the next few months. Currently I am debating on the new 13th gen i5 vs i7. For reference I currently have an i7-8700K so based on what I'm seeing, both are notably stronger.
My biggest concern is generally i5 vs. i7. I'm not completely sure I understand the difference. Is it simply i5s are slightly cheaper for slightly less performance? For example like Nvidia's 1070 vs. 1070 Ti? Or is there an actual technical limitation that only an i7 is capable of doing while an i5 is not?

Solution
I3/I5/I7/I9 no longer mean what they used to.
Namely how many cores and if there is hyperthreading.

Those designations are now more of a relative power capability.
10th,11th, 12th 13th gen also bring more performance per clock.
Your I7-8700K has 6 cores and 12 processing threads(hyperthreading)
It's cpu-Z single thread rating is 468:
http://valid.x86.fr/bench/pzi81n
The passmark rating is 13024/2659
By comparison the I5-13600K has 20 threads and a rating of
39974/4208
FWIW, the single thread performance is what matters to most games.
