I5 2320 bottlenecking msi gtx 970

I just recieved my MSI gtx 970 today and decided to try it out in bf4 on a 64 player server and i'm just not seeing the performance that other people are getting out of the card. Every video that i have seen has never dipped below 85 FPS however mine often goes into the 50s. My CPU remains at 80-90% usage and never maxes out however my GPU also doesnt max out and is usually around 60-80% on all ultra at 1080p.

A little background on my system. It started out as a dell prebuilt which is why my CPU is a little dated. I bought an r9 280x about a month ago but when I saw how cheap and how much more performance the gtx 970 gave I returned it and paid a little more for a 970. My r9 280x usually got around 70 FPS in BF4 but i believe it is because of mantle.

Just wanting some opinions and see if maybe my card is defective. I have read that any modern I5 cpu will not bottleneck the gtx 970 but im 90% sure it is my CPU. My mobo has an LGA 1155 socket so I am looking at upgrading to an I5 3570k if I need to.

CPU specs: as stated earlier this started as a prebuilt PC but ill name off some of the parts that I have put in there.

Rosewill 630W PSU
6gb ram
I5 2320 CPU
MSI GTX 970

I'm not sure I'd call that cpu "modern", it's release was in 2011. What is the model number of your motherboard? It should be printed on the motherboard or you might find it in system info in administrative tools. Perhaps related to memory configuration or PCIe x16 slot revision if it's an old revision.

Yes that is an absolute bottle neck on your GPU. I would upgrade that CPU and up the ram.

BF4 in large multiplayer maps is one of very few games that shows significant performance scaling all the way to i7.

I had mentioned the 3770 in a previous post i since deleted it. i didnt realize your older mobo the Intel Core i7-2600K would be the best CPU your mobo can handle found here as well as mony other places http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115070

Actually, it seems your board will support any of the i5 or i7 Sandy bridge cpus. I can't guarantee that 150%, but all the resources I looked at for that board said all Sandy bridge cpus were supported. There are a variety of i5 and i7 Sandy bridge cpus that would be very good upgrades with significant performance increases over your current cpu.

The i5 3570k and 3770k are Ivy bridge and therefore not supported, at least from what I'm seeing. It's possible that perhaps there has been a BIOS revision that changes that limitation, but I can't find any evidence of it for that board.

No, it's not. There are several higher end Sandy bridge models that would work with that board, if the Dell and Intel supporting documentation is still accurate, however, they are over 500 dollars each, so probably not a very smart investment.

I have thought about it a bit and i think i will just save up and replace the mobo and go with an i5 4690k. Everything I have read says it should be fine with the gtx 970.

However I am having a bit of an issue with the card. When I am playing a game where the usage exceeds 85-90% and i play it for 10-30 mins, in this case it was Witcher 2, the card just shuts off and my monitor stops receiving a signal. My PC doesn't shut down just the GPU and the audio loops.

I find this odd coming from an r9 280x which uses FAR more power and it worked perfectly. Only thing i can think of is that the card is defective. The card is running at stock clocks and the temp never exceeds 65 degrees C.

Or possibly the PSU has developed a failure in the circuit that supplies power to the PCIe plug. What is the model number of your Rosewill PSU?

So i guess we will see if this fixes it. If not i will probably RMA the card and try a different one. If the problem still persists then i suppose it would have to be my PSU but i highly doubt it.

Another forum with what seems like the same issue claiming a bios update is the fix so i guess i just wait on the new mobo.

If you don't have the most current BIOS firmware, I'd start there. Everything else is irrelevant until you have the most recent firmware version for hardware support issues.
