I5 2400 vs FX-6300

Hello Guys, My present rig is an FX-6300 and 970 motherboard with gtx 970 and hyperx 1800mhz ram, i had acquired i5 2400 + H61 motherboard. If i migrate my gtx 970 and ram to intel, will i increase any performance or i just downgraded. Its worthy to note that H61 has no pcie 3.0 and only 1333mhz ram support.

I know I can overclock the FX but Im eyeing a smaller case package which the i5 and H61 can bring.

The older i5-2400 is a true quad core, while the FX6300 behaves more like a 3 core.

While not much of an upgrade, the i5 will still be a little faster on most tasks, and despite being some years old has better single core performance.

yea the i5 2400 is still very strong per core, I was actually looking at one to pair with an h61 for my gf before I came across my phenom x6. Ram speed really doesn't matter for gaming, nor honestly does pci 3.0

I would keep the fx6300. If it's. Regular 2400 it's gonna be a pain to overclock, your ram will run much slower. Overclock the fx6300 and be done with it. If you are gaming with an overclock the 6300 shines. If you are multi tasking the extra cores will help more. I have a fx6300 in my spare machine that I built for my wife for mild gaming and its a great cpu. I have a 10% overclock on it now with a hyper 212 and under gaming load it never goes over 29c. It's a pretty sweet performer for the price.

How much will I gain in performance if I will get some Haswell I5s with cheap mobos?

You will gain a lot in most tasks. The single core performance is a lot better than the FX series. Some games such as Battlefield 4 will probably run the same so there is a few exceptions but most of the time the Haswell core will always come on top by quite a margin even at stock compared to a 6300 at 4.5ghz.

yeah, the haswell is much stronger per core. It would also consume less power than an overclocked fx if that matters to you.

for the price of an i5, you can often find a xeon 1230v3 which is an i7 4770 with no iGPU, or you could get a used i7 2600k and z68 mobos are cheap now, and overclock that or even at stock the 2600k would be strong. You could even go with the ivy bridge xeon 1230v2 and an h61 mobo and be good or b75 mobo. There really hasn't been a huge improvement in CPUs since sandy bridge despite what the marketing says or upgrade happy enthusiasts like to spout >_>

for what it's worth, on 1080p ultra w/no msaa or at the very worst, 1080p high settings, since 2012, I've been able to play any game I wanted with my stock 3.4ghz i5 3570k and an hd7950 with 8gb ram, it doesn't take that much to play stuff on 1080p. I even tried an hd 7870ghz and it played bf4 64player multiplayer on 1080p ultra with no msaa at 60fps with my stock i5 3570k, and hd 7870/r9 270s are really cheap on ebay.

I think you'll be happy with the switch to an i5 or xeon (or 2600k and z68). I know personally I don't see myself even upgrading for many years, my current pc is still way stronger than the next gen consoles, and no matter if we like it or not, let's be real, most games are just console ports.
