i5 2400s vs Amd Fx series

Was wondering is going for an amd over the i5 2400s is a good decision, i5 is not overclocked and i can get the amd and a motherboard for a really good deal, is it a worthwhile upgrade ? Im on a budget so cant go out buying skylakes and new motherboards and ddr4 ram so isit worth my while going for the fx, it will be used for gaming and little rendering paired with a gtx 780

Hmm tough to say without an overclock I would rather have an fx 6300 or 8300 than a stock i5 2400. Their may be some applications where the i5 performs better but I would say in most games and especially rendering the fx 6300 will be better. What is your budget for a cpu and motherboard?

Sorry i forgot to mention its a 6300 or 8350 depending on the price most likely a 6300, im getting the both for around 150 euro so its seems like a pretty good deal whereas if i were to go haswell it would cost a lot more for the likes of a 4460 or 4690 and a motherboard then on top of that

If you already own the i5 2400 and are looking for an upgrade by going AMD you really should go for the FX 8350 or FX 8370E over the FX 6300. The FX 6300 in gaming won't seem like much of an upgrade, rendering will be better though. I would highly recommend the FX 8370E (and you can also get a quality 970 tier 1 motherboard for around $65 now that would be killer). I have seen the FX 8370E around for $150 (all prices in US dollars, don't know exchange rater for Euros) and would offer better performance than the FX 6300, especially in rendering and is only 95W. The FX 8370E is also very overclockable (most I have worked with can hit 4.9 - 5Ghz with little problem) and would be a really good fit on one of the new 970 tier 1 motherboards (unless you are getting a much better deal on a different motherboard). At 95W the FX 8370E is also much more compatible with a larger list of motherboards than the FX 8350 or FX 8370.

while id partly agree on the 8 core comment it really all depends on what motherboard is on offer.
something with a 4+1 phase is better suited to to the 6 core fx 6300 as there is still room for overclocking,there wouldnt be with any of the 8 core chips because as soon as you hit them with voltage & clock increases the power draw increases dramatically.
If its a solid 6+2 or 8+1 phase like the 970 gaming or gigabyte ud3p then thats largely irrelevant as they'll do the job with either option,
the 6300 is though imo still a decent increase over that old low wattage i5s once pushed past the 4ghz mark .
the bonus really coming from sandy/ivy is most of those old baords are sata 2/usb2/ 1333mhz max ram speed so coming to even the relaitvely old am3+ chipset you do also gain a few more modern standards with sata 3/usb3/1866mhz ram.

and the cpu is a fx 8320 thats the deal i am offered for a swap for the i5 2400s ?, is that good enough to accept it will be purely for gaming and rendering

that my friend is absolutely good enough - Id swap in a heartbeat - if you can drop some money on an aftermarket cooler to make the most from it ,it would be well advised.

FX 8350 owner here.
Seen how you have to get a new board anyways, why not go for a 4th GEN intel, like a 4590 or a 4690/k? They would be much much better than AMD in games. Your 2400's gaming performance would probably be very similar to an FX 8320/8350 anyways. To get decent performance outta an AMD Chip you have to overclock the crap out of it which means upping the voltage which means shortening the life of the chip and voiding your warranty.

It wouldn't honestly be worth swapping over to AMD at this time, if you had a 2nd gen i3 or something it might be worth it, But you have a capable i5.

I personally, would wait a year or so until the 2400s isn't performing up to scratch anymore then see what the new AMD's are like and how they stack up against the existing intel range.


You would not see a boost in anything if you swapped to a FX 6300.



Edit: Just read that you didnt want to spend that much on a 4th gen. In that case I'd see if you can find a second hand 3rd gen i5 like a 3570k seen how it would be compatible with your board.

I dont know if youve missed that the cpu he has is an s series,which is made ultimately for efficiency - if it was a regular 2400 I would be closer to agreeing with you but that s series chip will only boost on a max of 2 cores,with mutithreaded games/apps the lower base clock of 2.5ghz is going to be more detrimental than you would think.
