i5 2500 and gtx 950, thoughts?

hi im looking for a cheap pc build and came across this, just looking for peoples opinions, its prices at £250, will I neeed to upgrade any time soon? looking to play overwatch and aaa titles at ideally 60fps on med-high, thanks very much

Hey, unfortunately only found this German benchmark showing GTX 960 + GPUs. Assume GTX 950 is slightly below and should deliver around 60 FPS in Overwatch. If budget allows any GPU up to 1050 ti I would pair with an i5-2500. Hope this helps.

thanks, I think my main concern is would the i5 still be suitable If I wanted to update in the future, for instance get a new gpu in a year? thanks, and are we talking 60fps on overwatch on max settings

i5 2500 was a GREAT CPU back in it's day but I wouldn't invest and money into a dead platform. I would look a an AMD Ryzen 3 1200 setup. It will be faster than the 2500 and will give you the ability to upgrade it later in the future. An i5 2500 basically gives a zero upgrade path.

Ok well the other option was a rig priced at £230 with a gtx 1050, but only a amd fx 4300, which I know is an underpowered cpu,

Am I correct in thinking I could buy a core i5 2500k for around £40/£50 used, and then upgrade with that? Thanks very much for the input

No. AMD and Intel CPU are not interchangeable. Like I said, there's basically no upgrade path for an i5 2500 system.

Yes, it would be the same problem. I understand you're on a budget but you should really look at an AMD Ryzen R3 1200 setup. It will be faster than the i5 2500 and has an upgrade path for the foreseeable future. Hopefully it's something you could financially consider.

The 2500 series motherboards came out somewhere in 2010 or 2011. Since then, they've release several new chipsets that the 2500 is not compatible with so newer, more modern CPU's will NOT physically fit into those older motherboards.

The Ryzen chips are new to the market (came out a year ago) and will keep coming out with new chips until at least 2020.

So basically, if you wanted to upgrade the Ryzen CPU a few years from now they will still be very relevant.

He doesn't own the system yet so he's not upgrading anything. He's looking at a i5 2500 for £250....full stop. Now take into the fact that an i7 3770k sells for roughly £150 he would be investing at least £400 into a dated, dead-end system. for that price, he could step into a new, modern Ryzen setup that has an upgrade path for years to come.

Who is speaking about NEW hardware of this old generation confirming the prices you state? You can get both i5 and i7 as use parts for 10-20 bugs. Thus there is no need to fully upgrade CPU+mobo+RAM as you are suggesting.

I really think you need to read wildcherries original post. He DOES NOT own this PC so there is nothing for him to upgrade. He would have to buy the system FIRST, then spend money to upgrade it. By the time he does that he could basically get all new parts that are faster for the same price instead.

Sorry to say that again. If he is looking for a "cheap" solution than it is not required to go for new and state of the art hardware. He can also buy good used parts for far lower prices and can still be happy with this choice. We both have the same intention = helping. Just with different approaches.
