i5-2500k/8gb/OnBrdVid vs Xeon e3-1270v1/16gb/550ti

ECS X77H2-A3 V1.2 + e3-1270v1 + 16gb/1600 ram + GTX 550ti
vs
ASUS P8H61-M LE/CSM R2.0 + i5-2500k + 8gb/1600 ram + onboard video

No gaming, dual monitors, biggest challenge, if I should choose to accept it, converting my video library from mpeg2/ac3 to h264/aac x 500..

So which do you keep, and which do you upgrade your dad's machine with??

The xeon pc is better in every way for that. Better cpu, more ram, better gpu.

Focusing on the cpu (using the 550ti and selling 4x4gb for 2x8gb is not that big a deal)

I would think the 1270 would beat the 2500k but looking
at the benches it's not as clear, and since the benches
are pre-oc it's even less clear who wins?

Synthetics are not a good comparison. Look at real world multithreaded or single threaded and the stock 2500k loses in everything. The e3 has a higher turbo for higher single threaded and ht for anything multi threaded.

Well pulling some full passmark baselines the only wins for the 1270 are "integer math" & "Extended Instructions (SSE)" everything else is clear 2500k or tossup, but single threaded and overall it's the 2500k

Of course this may be mute if post office doesn't get it's act together. Currently the 2500k is MIA , I gave the seller one more biz day and if I don't see movement tomorrow I'm ready to hit the reset button on this whole process, which is turning out 2 b a real cluster-flock..
