I'm looking to overclock my i5-2500k but currently it has a stock air cooler. Im not looking to do any thing crazy 4.1 maybe 4.2 idk what its capable of from what ive read a lot of people have theirs cranked to as much as 4.4 -4.5 but I just want a little extra kick to help keep up with my new RX 580 I just ordered. and is it even necessary? I guess I just assumed I would need to at least slightly overclock to perform well in modern games. not sure until I get the card in the next few days. but I wanna have some cooling options lined up.

First things first, I've never OC and I don't even know where to begin, and 2nd I need advice on good cooling. can a hyper 212 evo do the job? or is something more substantial required.

System Specs:

Asus P8z68-V Gen 3 motherboard
i5-2500k stock @3.3 ghz (stock cooler)
16gb DDR 3 1600mhz ram (4x4)
Radeon RX 580 8gb
750w power supply
128GB SSD (OS only)
500GB HDD

Cooling
1- 80mm intake
2 140mm intake
1 140mm exhaust in the back
no way to vent out the top im using an old school "Alienware area 51 x58 wartime edition" case the one that looks like an alien head.

I do have a spot in the front where there was original liquid cooling but quit working I think the radiator is 2 fan slots wide, id rather stay away from going liquid cooling but if its necessary im not against it. just looking for a cheaper route to play newer games 1080p @ 60 fps. I have a 75hz amd freesync monitor so much over 60 isn't necessary.

thanks, I updated my post to reflect this.

You could try bringing the CPU to 4.2 - 4.5GHz and see if runs stable, by performing daily tasks.

I had the Asus P8Z 68-V LXI and I ran it at 4.8GHz with the CM Hyper Evo 212 for many years and now I and using the 2500K on my HTPC and still going at 4.2GHz.

AT 4.2GHz I just set the cores to 42 and at 4.5 - 4.8GHz, I adjusted CPU voltage to 0.005
Also I made these BIOS changes

Select the AI Tweaker tab in the BIOS
Set Ai Overclock Tuner to Manual
BCLK/PCIE Frequency set to 100
Turbo Ratio set to By All Cores
By All cores set to 42 or 45
Internal PLL Overvoltage to Enabled
CPU Offset Mode Sign to +
CPU voltage to 0.005 (when 45-48)

On the Monitor tab
CPU Q-Fan Control to Disabled
Chassis Q-Fan Control to Disabled
Anti Surge Support to Enabled
