I have been running an i5 2500k for nearly 4 years and are now seriously considering moving to a Skylake platform. Being at school when I bought my i5 2500k, i did skimp on some parts to try to save money, the motherboard being the main one. I tried overclocking on it when I first got it but even a modest overclock of 0.2GHz caused the computer to not boot so is out of the question to gain free performance. Adding to the fact that the motherboard likes to whine considerably when under load, I think now might be the time to replace it. I mainly use my computer for gaming, software development, photo editing and general word processing for assignments. Although I am at college and money is fairly tight, I don't really want to skimp on parts again. I will use the power supply, graphics card and hard drives from my current system. This is the build that I have come up with:

Solution
For gaming until you not use high end GPU is not worthy but in photo editing you will see significant boost.

Solution

Hmm interesting. Will games actually use all 6 cores or is this more of future proofing thing?

yep and fallout 4 uses extra thread not cores but in future games it i wen't with 5820k because it gives much better value for same price what would you want go for 300 pounds a 6 core or 4 core cpu i would for 5820k and if you want to save more money then 4790k is way to go because games don't benefit from ddr4
