I5-3300S vs FX-6300

I have both a I5-3300S and a FX6300 to hand.
I am wondering which will give me better gaming performance. I believe it to be the I5 but am not 100% sure.

I5-3300S with ASRock H61M-DGS R2.0 Motherboard

or

FX 6300 with ASRock 960GM-VGS3

Palit GTX 970
10Gb DDr3 Ram
500w PSU

The I5 without a doubt. Well, unless you would overclock the hell out of that 6300, witch you will not be able to do on a 960 board.

GO WITH INTEL. They have a much wider range of options, they perform better, they're more consistent, they only cost a little more, and if you save up enough money, you can go to a high end CPU without needing to buy a new motherboard.

I doubt there would be much difference -- a fixed 2.7GHz might hold you back 15-20% compared to an i5 with Turbo against the FX-6300.

Id assume it would stll be a capable processor as they were released around the same time and intel is known for their power per core compared to AMD multithreading

You chose a game biased towards multiple cores. Most games are not that well optimized, and would benefit more from teh higher IPC of teh Intel CPU.
