i5 3470 vs G4560

Hi i have a * pc period and i want an upgrade i bought an old "gaming" pc from a guy in my area which has a gtx 560 and a q8400 for $110 not bad i guess? but i want an upgrade and since i didnt actually built the system myself i want to buy new cuz of warranty but ya know better bang for the buck is in used so im picking between the 3470 or G4560 the Ram does not matter because my school is giving away some withered down i5 6400 unit (broken cpu) and hopefully some ram will work

Well, if you're going to be using RAM from that school computer you can only use the G4560 since, more likely than not, the school computer uses DDR4 RAM.

G4560 is more good for new platform. Also there is no differences between them except rendering.

so which should i go for? I currently have 8GB DDr3 from this system

So i shoud go for the 4560 because of upgradability

Yes, go with the newer chip.
