Hi people, I just bought my new combo yesterday and I'm seeing some overheating and I don't know if it's normal with the stock cooler. I was playing AC1 and the temperature goes over 70ºC with 40% cpu core usage. I don't know what's happening, I applied the thermal past with my professor but I don't know if it was applied correctly, even the quantity, but right know while I'm browsering I can get 40ºC/46ºC.

I live in Brazil and here is a little bit hot, those images below show my gameplay with the case side open.

When I applied the thermal past I didn't remove the processor from the MB because I was afraid of benting pins. So I removed the dry past with a smooth paper and applied the new one on the processor and the cooler. My professor helped me but I don't know if I put too much thermal past. I don't think I damaged the processor, are those temps expected with a stock cooler?

I want to avoing the themal past re-apply because I'm afraid of doing something wrong because my combo was expensive and I'm really broke right now. See my rig:

i5 3570 (intel cooler)
ga-b75m-d3h
8gb corsair vengeance
GTX 550 TI

Please help me, I really want to play but I'm scared of overheating and then killing my cpu. Sorry for my english, I tried my best.

EDIT: Yesterday I made a test running the game with some windows, programs and media player open and I saw the cpu going over than 80°C and after that I had blue screen of the death but I checked the bios and the cpu high temperature security reset was disable.

Solution

I already see a major problem. You don't have proper case cooling. I feel like this could be a pre-built computer and that means that cooling is weak. Your case should have at a minimum....one front intake and one front exhaust. Even that isn't enough in many cases (not the physical case).
My professor did it, he just put a point of the finger (it was not a grain of rice, hehe) and then he put the rest at the cooler (it was not like a paper, there was volume. I meant overheating because he just got over 80+ and I had blue screen even with the option of temperature reset disable in the bios.

I'm worried because I read somewhere the max temp for ivy is 67,4 and I get 75°c average as you can see with lower of 50% usage in AC1. I'm scared of playing it because I don't want to burn and then kill my cpu.

I think I'm gonna see him tomorrow and explain the situation and then I will ask him to help me reapplying. But could you answer just one question? When he took off the old thermal past wirh a smooth paper with the cpu installed, could he have damaged the processor?

EDIT: I just ran Prime95 for only 5 seconds and the temps went over 80ºC so I stopped the test scared of damaging!

Hi, I'm back. I reapplied the thermalpaste and I got a decrease temperature. I don't know if I installed the cooler box correctly (it's really difficult to install that thing). The first time I put the cooler and the temps where 56ºc in bios, and increasing, I powered off the computer and tried to install again. I saw that only a half of the thermal paste has touched the cooler, so I reinstalled and after a long time trying, I turned on the computer. Temps in idle are 40°c and I played AC1 and I haven't seen the temperature going over 65ºc (I just played some minutes). In prime95 I got 80ºc and it was increasing slowly, when I got 85°c I stopped the test.

Now my question: I put the new thermal paste all over the cpu, it was not only in the centre, I covered the cpu with my fingers smoothly (I tried a credit card but it was removing instead of applying). Am I gonna have problems in the future because of it? Should I remove again and apply only in the centre where the cooler touches? And will the temps get better after a time? (I did it 20 minutes before and I'm using the computer).

The tests where made with the case open, I'm gonna close it and try again.

From what I've read...people over apply thermal compound. They are worried about not enough but they don't realize that too much is just as bad. Imagine the compound as a blanket on a bed. You don't want a bed sheet as think as your mattress.

Try applying the compound and giving the system some time to adjust. Run daily tasks and see if temp is bad. then try Prime95.

Well I ran AC1 for some minutes and the system seemed ok. I took some notes:

CPU Usage: 41.3%
Temp: 68ºc/69ºc/70°c
CPU FAN: 2743RPM

I tried to stay in a place where I could have almoust 50% os cpu usage and then I got:

CPU Usage: 44.2% - 45.1%
Temps: 73ºC/74ºC/75ºC
CPU FAN: 2922RPM (sometimes more sometimes less).

I got these tempes with my case closed (I have no additional fan and my case is quite old).

Should I give a time to the thermal past or should I reapply it again?

I don't even know the name of my case, I didn't buy it, it was my father. I don't know if I put the cooler correctly, it was difficult but I think I did. I don't have fans in my case, only the stock cooler.

With the case open the temps were hitting 73°C after 30 minutes. Is it okay? Should I stop playing? I can't buy right now a case and cooler, only in october or november (I spent all my money with these componentes, I'm really broke)

Can you buy a $10 fan? You need more than one fan. You need to get cool outside air in and hot air out. Or if you can spare $30 you could get a Cooler Master Evo. It'll definitely improve your CPU temps.

Do you mean, when gaming, the CPU temp reaches 73C after 30 minutes? If so, it's ok not great. It's ok playing at that temp.

Ok, I'll buy a new case, cpu cooler and fans so I could play. Intel God (I'm not an expert so I don't know what you mean by undervolting the cpu vcore and I don't know how harmful it could be to my cpu.

I don't understand how you applied thermal paste in the first place if you have a stock cooler. They have a strip of thermal paste already on them. Those temps seem about right considering your area and the fact that you're using a stock cooler. I get about 30c all year except for summer when I get 40c with the same cpu. It probably goes up to 50 or even 70 when I play games but I never bothered to check.

Undervolting means running it at a lower voltage. Intel usually sets the voltage higher then needed for 3.5ghz. Lowering the voltage intel set will decrease temps

I agree with above !
just little correction :
"Your case should have at a minimum....one front intake and one BACK exhaust."
That`s how you intake from the front and exhaust to the back
in advanced :
- use 120 or 140 mm Fans - if you case have space to hold them
- do NOT play with open side case you have bad air-flow this way
- if you case is small or mid size and lac of System FAN`s will hold the HOT air from the GPU inside - this will increase the CPU temp - that i think is happening here ...

Advice - agreed :
- add 2 x 120 - 140 Sys Fans - front & back
If the problem is there again :
- change the case with BIG TOWER after SOLID research before that :)

Regards !

I'm gonna buy a new as soon as possible. I have no space to put those fans and my case is full tower but it's old. My GPU put the air down the same way ,my psu does. It's like this:

- PSU (Down)
- CPU (Side)
- GPU (Down)

It might the the hot air from my gpu is going up because of hot air being more density than cold air while my psu puts the hot air down. Could it be causing a hot air-flow at the cooler?

But another question: monitoring my temperatures, with the case open the temperature takes a longer time do get higher, and I haven't seen it going over than 74ºc while playing. If I close the case the temperature gets faster at 72ºc. Why should I close it?

I have good news, I made a test today playing and with 50% of cpu usage I got 58ºc, the temps never got over 64ºc while playing, it keeps at 58ºc - 61ºc. I think that I needed a time for the thermal past to take control of it. Tomorrow I'm gonna make another test and I'll see if it keeps this way. I played with the case open.
