I'm currently thinking of upgrading my i5 3570 to i5 6600 - is this worth it in terms of performance increase? Or should I invest in a 144Hz monitor instead? Used mainly for gaming and my GPU is an ASUS Strix GTX970. However, my motherboard is a Gigabyte Z77-D3H (Socket 1155) - is it compatible?

Solution
You'd need a new motherboard for the skylake i5 and new ram would be recommended also. Skylake uses either ddr3L (low power, not standard ddr3) or ddr4 and runs on a socket 1151 100 series motherboard. Something like and h170, z170, b150 etc.

A 144hz monitor will only be a noticeable improvement if you're able to push well over 60fps in games. Otherwise it may not benefit you much. Personally I don't think you'll see a massive improvement in games from the 3570 > 6600. Not for the cost of a new cpu + mobo + ram and a reinstall of windows.

I think it would be better if you upgrade to a 3770k rather than changing your cpu and mb to skylake. There isn't that many ipc improvement from ivy bridge to skylake. But there is still hopes for zen though :)
