Hi all, I am new here. Please be gentle :).

I am wondering if I would see much increase in performance if I was to upgrade my system to a newer AMD Ryzen or Intel CPU.

i5 3570k @ 4.7Ghz
Z77-D3H mobo
32GB Corsair DDR3
RX480 8GB

I have an aging i5 3570k that I just overclocked to 4.7Ghz. It is stable while gaming and it provides 75 fps (Max on my monitor) on the games I play. I have no qualms about the performance, just wasn't sure if it was feasible to upgrade now or if I would be better to stay with this hardware until it is much faster upgrades.

Any idea how much performance gain I would get if I went from this setup to something now?

Thanks,

If all you're doing is gaming, whilst you would get a general performance increase (game/resolution/graphics dependent) it probably wouldn't be worth the price you are paying. Unless of course we are talking about Emulators, which are usually much more processor core/speed dependent.

If however you use your PC for other tasks, such as video editing, video encoding, 3D CAD etc. then the difference in performance would likely be HUGE!

In my mind, PC's are only worth upgrading IF you can justify it and are not happy with the performance of your current setup. 4.7ghz on a 3570k is a good overclock.

Generally you can expect the low end of the framerate to be helped by a better CPU/motherboard/ram setup. For instance, if you're getting 75fps average but seeing the occasional drops to 45fps, in theory a new CPU might mean the framerate only drops to 60fps. You'd still only be seeing the max and average that your videocard allows, but the low end might be a bit more stable.(edit: numbers just used to illustrate the point).

This is of course subject to a lot of variables. For one thing, not all games are created equal. In some games you might see framerate drops due to the game being poorly optimized, and a better CPU wouldn't necessarily help you there.

It sounds to me like this system is getting the job done, so I'd stick with it. One day it'll fail to keep up with your needs, THAT is the day to start thinking about building a new system.

I don't know if this is a normal reply message or an answer message lol.

Anyways,

Thanks everyone for the help and advice! I truly appreciate it.

I have decided to spend money I don't have and hope to sell my older hardware to make up for it.

I purchased:
- Intel i9 9900K
- 32GB of Corsair 3200Mhz ram
- ASUS Z390-A Motherboard.

Is this a good purchase?

Thanks,

Hahahahaha!

I need 32GB for photoshop and premiere.

I did take your advice but I just couldn't resist. The alternative would be for me to buy a capture care and use two PCs to stream. That would be about $220 bucks. I would have to upgrade anyways so I figured if I spend $1400 and sell my old pc hardware for 600 or so - it would be worthwhile.

Is the NOCTUA D14 sufficient to cooling the i9 9900k??

Ah, yeah your current system can't do much for your intended use.... I've got the same 3570k.... And it's a real passion to use premiere. Last video I did... 6 minutes, took almost 1hr to render.... (I know about quick render as you go, I didn't use it because of deadline issue)

Why did you sell!?
