I5 3570k about 90c when playing gta 5 on a 40c day

For 40C ambient Temp 90C is not Normal at all. It will shorten the Lifespan of that CPU. Better get an Aftermarket Cooler.

I just have the stock cooler. Also, its idling around 50c and its actually closer to 80-85c when playing games on hot days. How dangerous is this for the cpu? Is it normal? And is it safe to continue playing like this?

It's not really safe to continue playing with those temps. The stock cooler probably won't be adequate if you have a 40 degree celsius ambient temperature. If you can't get your computer running in a room with air conditioning then you'll need to look at an aftermarket CPU cooler.

The Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo is an inexpensive air cooler that should help keep your temps down. If you're looking to do serious overclocking in your environment, you'd probably have to start looking at water cooling. Your ambient temperature is double standard room temperature, so your CPU is going to run 20 degrees hotter than it normally would with whatever cooler you use.
