Im trying to figure out why BF1 is chugging so hard on my pc, but runs like butter on my laptop.

That is my laptop minus the SSD.

My PC is running an i5 3570k and a gtx g1 970, 8 gb of ram. Because the mobo/cpu are the oldest parts on the computer im assuming they are whats causing BF1 to chug badly. Im just confused because its clock rates are not very much slower than modern cpus. The other issue is that i need to clean my box, i have a temperature monitor. What can i look for when playing bf1 to tell if my cpu/gpu are being throttled due to overheating?

Solution
The cpu will throttle at its throttle temps regardless what the application is, whether gaming, video editing etc. Chances are the hyper threading of the i7 is helping it run better on the laptop. It's a cpu intensive game and both threads and cpu speed have an effect. To check temps of the cpu try using realtemp.

If the cpu temps are exceeding 80c it might be worth looking into, throttle temp should be around 100c. If it's not hitting even 80c then doubtful temps are your problem though 75c or under would be preferable. For the gpu try looking at the nvidia software or using something like msi afterburner. Similar temps for the gpu, it should be around 80c or less.

Are you running the same version of bf1 on both pc and laptop? Some found the older beta version actually ran a bit better than the final release. It's been a common issue that people are getting different experiences on different hardware, bf1 doesn't have all the performance bugs worked out yet.

The 6700HQ is indeed a faster CPU. Skylake has about 20% more performance per clock and though its clockspeed is a little lower than the i5's, hyperthreading gives another 30% or so throughput on top of that. The GTX 1060 is also slighty faster than a 970, though not by too terribly much.

I'd expect the i5 to perform alright in BF1, really. I'd suggest you look at CPU and GPU utilization while playing, and try to determine what's limiting you more here.

I think its the cpu, according to task manage its capping out, though the temp is 40 ish so its not being throttled. Gpu is right around 50, so thats fine. Looks like i need to upgrade.

Any reccomendations? My case has a radiator slot so i will probably get a radiator for the new cpu, probably 200-300 price range, i could spend more if i really saw a justification for it.

If looking in that price range the least expensive upgrade option would be a 3rd gen i7 for your board. You might be able to squeeze a more budget oriented skylake i5, inexpensive motherboard and ram into that budget but the gains would probably be minimal.

Have you already overclocked your cpu? What motherboard and cpu cooler are you using? If it's a k series board and you have a decent aftermarket cooler but you haven't overclocked it yet that would be the least expensive way to boost performance a bit without buying a new cpu.

I meant for the cpu alone, For the whole shebang id be willing to spend as much as 500 or 600.

I should probably OC, ive never done it before which is the main reason ive held back. Im running an asrock z77 with a thermaltake heatsink and a corsair pwm fan on each end. The other issue is because there wasnt a proper mount for the heatsink and fans i have the fans attached to the heatsink via 12 pound test fishing line, which might melt at a higher temp. Now is probably the best time to do that as its cold right now, my house temperature hoovers around 65, lol.

On a side note bf1 is running pretty well today, some stutters but at least the fps isnt affecting my aim.

Your CPU is topped out at 100% usage with a temperature of 40? Is there a possibility you could offer a MSI Afterburner OSD screenshot like

Click the Gear in MSI Afterburner to access settings. Click Monitoring tab. Click the resource you want to monitor(See in real time) and then click SHow in OSD which is near the bottom of the monitoring window..

:bounce:65F? That would help things
My room was just a wee bit cooler when I took this screenshot

It's due to the 970 imo.

I've seen more than a few YouTube videos where they exceeded 8GB RAM. That upgrade may help a wee bit but in the end BF1 is not a good game to judge a system by. Bad CPU optimization is a known issue if I'm not mistaken. Dice did us no favors with that release.

I really hope it isnt, my gpu is less than a year old. I use cpuid, but my system went unrecoverable a minute ago and my text export of the logs looks empty like it didnt save. My CPU peak was 48C and my GPU was in the 60s i believe.

We'll see when you've overclocked your CPU and we have some hard real-time data. Crank up your 970 too if you can. I have the FTW version and it still overclocks pretty good. I haven't tried to push it with voltages and all that jazz. Just basic core and memory clock increases.

My old computer died at the wrong time, per Muphy via his law.. I needed a new one not 3 months before the ne 10xx series came out. :pfff: Still very satisfied with my 970 FTW
