i5-3570k OC vs. i5-4670k OC

I am building a gaming rig and have narrowed down my options to the 3570k or the 4670k. Stock the 4670k certainly wins but from reading reviews and forums it doesn't overclock as well, avg. about 4.2 GHZ vs. an avg. of 4.6 GHZ for the 3570k (correct me if I'm wrong). Are there any benches out there comparing these CPUs at these specs? I can only find benches with them at the same.

Also should I really care about the couple extra usb 3.0 and satalll ports on the 1150 mobos? I'm not concerned with future proofing since I will start from scratch again for my next rig.

All in all which CPU should I go with? It looks like the 4670k would be about 100 bucks (American) more including more expensive mobos for equal performance. Am I wrong or is 3570k really the better option?

I agree with your assumption, due to its better OCing potential, the 3570K is just BETTER, if the extra SATA and USB3 means nothing to you, then the 3570K is the clear option if you plan on OCing. Especially since its cheaper.

Do a search at various sites like Xtreme and overclock and you'll see 4.4-4.6Ghz average air overclocks. The Costa rica chips are starting to show up and are hitting 5Ghz on air. The 3570K is not the better chip. Both will have heat issues at 1.3v

Its all about the silicone lottery. Bit tech hit 4.7Ghz with their 4770K, Hardware canucks hit 4.5Ghz, TPU hit 4.2Ghz.

Yes, it is all about the silicon (silicone goes somewhere else) lottery. And quoting i7 clock's doesn't help because it usually overclocks better than the i5, and the OP wants to know about the i5. If the OP is going to completely rebuild his comp when skylake comes out, then there's no concrete to go for haswell when ivy bridge performs the same (when overclocked) and costs less and uses less power (if you care).

I wouldn't worry about a couple extra usb 3.0 and sataIII ports on the 1150 mobo as I doubt you'll use that many. Most mid-range mobo's already come with like 4 sata3 and 2-6 sata2 and I doubt you'll have more than 4 HDD's/SSD's. If you need more USB 3.0 ports, just get a pci usb card.

Yeah, same thing applies, most people get AT LEAST 4.4GHz on a cheap Cooler master Hyper 212 EVO on the 3570K. I got 4.7GHz on a H80 or a Thermalright Silver Arrow (similar to the Noctua NH-D14).

Both haswell K chips should overclock around the same. The Malaysia chips suck. They sucked for Ivy and they sucked for Haswell. My first Malaysian Ivy overclocked horribly

Are you a haswell owner? Then what exactly are you doing in this thread? If you dont own the processor you have no business in here. You claimed 80% of 4770K's couldn't go past 4.2Ghz and i proved you wrong.

1 Sample of Haswel is not enough to base an opinion on, you may be the luckiest man alive and get a 4770K to 5GHz on air, yet no one else ever will...
Owner or not, knowledge is power, your experience is different from a hundred others I have read... So how credible should I find you? Or should I just think you are lucky?

What is your personal OC on your Haswel chip?

Im in the same boat, im building new pc but im steering towards ivybridge due to the lower temperatures. Altho haswell can have a slight increase in performance, its mainly about an improved igpu and power efficiency and like 10-30%? better at synthetic benchmarks, maybe 5/10 fps increase in games, but im going for the i7 3770k ive seen they seem to oc better than 3570k.. plus in games like BF3 3770k has less minimum fps drops and i like gaming at 120hz with my 780
