i5 3570K - on auto o.c. I have 4.2ghz @ 1.4 . it is delided. for 20$

2x4gb ram cl9 1333 (no difference on ram whatsoever)
600w psu
ssd kingston suv 400
2x hdd
gaming mouse etc
win 10 pro x64

my setup is less than 300$

what I want now is best gpu for 1440 144 and a new monitor.

should I go for 1080 ti ? it is too much a 20xx for this build ?

how far can I go ?

Anything above a 1060 will get bottlenecked. But since you're trying to go for 1440p at 144Hz you'll need a 1070 or 1070 Ti. The only problem is because of your bottleneck, you might not be able to reach 144Hz stable.

What is your budget? I would rather recommend you a new build because it doesn't make sense to spend more than 300$ on a GPU when everything else costs less than that. You would be wasting performance.

When it comes to triple A titles, won't reach fps high enough to match your monitor's refresh rate, with an i5 3570k and I normally wouldn't recommend anything higher gtx 1060 6gb. Do you have a graphics card now?

Have to agree that 100fps is 100fps.
I'd go gsync if you can, I'd be happy pairing my 3570k @4.3 to a 1080 and expect some losses, but then when I do upgrade the platform would actually get a boost out of the GPU, else a platform upgrade will do nothing for you.

60 fps on 60hz will be the same as 60fps on 144hz. 144fps on 144hz will feel much smoother that 144fps on 60hz. 144hz monitor just "refreshes" more often than 60hz and allows you to actually see more than 60fps. If what you are saying would be true, than the only use case for a 144hz monitor would be playing counter strike.

it's not so simple. If the 60fps were 100% consistent then there is a point that a 144hz screen would not refresh in sync with it, but a 120Hz would quicte happily do it, BUT the 60fps will never be 100% consistent, sometimes it'll be ready early, other times late. With a 60 hz screen you've lost a whole cycle and have to wait for 1/60th of a second for the next refresh window, with a 144hz screen the next refresh window is always closer. So in real life more hz on the screen is always better.

If your monitor refreshes rate is higher than your actual frame rates; you will feel and see stutters.

Now of course, 120fps on a 144hz is still better than 60fps at 60hz (and we are talking about constant fps here for the sake of the argument).

However, consider the bottleneck from his CPU, he will have difficulty reaching a stable 144fps while gaming. Specially for AAA games. In which case, he will experience a lot of stuttering while gaming. Most people end up reducing their monitor's refresh rates to match their fps because it's not a pleasurable FPS. It's a similar experience to when you have 50fps on 60hz monitors.

At some point you'll want to upgrade the platform, if your gpu is maxed out on current system, then when you upgrade you'll see next to no improvement, so you'll have to invest a lot more at that time to see any benefit.
If however your gpu is sightly over specced then when you upgrade your platform then your gpu can perform even better without the cost of a gpu upgrade at that time,
It's something to consider.
