i am looking to upgrade and i have those 2 options.Which one would be better for gaming 1080p?

And something else, right now i have been left with a q6600 with a 7770 will i get a performance boost if i use one of the above gpu's temporarily or i should not even bother install for lets say a week in the q6600 system?

I wouldn't pair the Q6600 with the 980; you'll most likely create a bottleneck.

For a gaming PC, the GPU should always take priority over the CPU unless they're both very old. In that case, you'd need to replace both at the same time.

For a 1920x1080 60hz monitor, both the 970 and 980 will do a good job and you can see the differences for yourself; http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/nvidia-geforce-gtx-980-970-maxwell,3941.html. If you decide to step-up to 2560x1440 or 144hz, then the 980 is certainly the better card.

An overclocked CPU won't offer the same performance boost as a better GPU.
Q6600 is out of the game. If you are looking only for 1080p then the gtx 970 is a beast, can run everything at 1080p, absolutely everything. If you are not planning on going for anything beyond that then go for 4690k with gtx 970. By no means the 4570 is a bad CPU, it will run everything just fine, thing is if you are not aiming for more than 1080p then the 980 is simply pointless. Also the performance boost 970 to 980 is not as high as for example 980 to 980ti. 980 is one of the worst performers when it comes down to performance <-> price ratio.

Dude I would not pair that Q6600 with anything, you should go for the second option and get the 970 combo. If you reallt have the cash for the 980 then do it but in either case you will be replacing your entire mobo also and maybe even the PSU. So take that into account before you make you`re choice.

the q6600 and the 7770 are temporary after a gtx 660 and an i5 2500 i had died. My psu is a Corsair CX650 i think is enough for the 980 and the i5.
i can get the 2 options for the same price thats why i am asking. For the motherboard i am looking for the MSI Z97 PC Mate so even if i take the 4570 i will have the option to overclock if i buy a K processor in the future.
