I5-4590 + GTX 1060 6gb????

Hi everyone,

I'm wanting to know if the i5-4590 (3.3ghz) would be a good combination for 1080p gaming with the 6gb GTX 1060. Would it be better than a fx-6300? and would it bottleneck?

it would definitely be better than the fx 6300 for gaming by a decent margin. the 1060 6gb will be a good pair with that CPU it may bottleneck a tittle in some CPU intensive games but that's ok. it just means that your CPU will be working at it's max depending on what you play, doesn't mean that the GPU won't work just fine. you should be able to get 50-60fps @ 1080p in most games without too much of an issue. just make sure your PSU has adequate power and PCIe 6-8 pin power

What do you currently have and what are the prices for all these? The GTX 1060 is a decent option in all circumstances, maybe try checking the used market in your local area as well because 1070s are selling for $250-60 where I live.

As far as the processor goes though, if you also have to buy a motherboard, maybe it's worth just upgrading to a new platform like ryzen and selling your old stuff?

Yeah I understand what your saying, however the closest ryzen to my budget would be a r3 1200 or r3 2200g. Including a new mobo ddr4 ram into this is extremely expensive and the i5-4590 delivers very similar performance to the r3 if not better; all at a much lower price. At the moment i have a fx-6300, msi areocool gtx 1060 6gb and 16gb of 1600mhz ddr3 ram. if you have an older slower cpu but all of the parts the ngoing with a cpu upgrade is fine. if your going with new cpu/ram and mb combo then no. look at the newer i3-8100 or the locked i5 8400. if you have a local micro center there combo deals on mb and cpu. the newer mb and cpu will let you upgrade latter on if needed.

He's from oz so I have a feeling that he doesn't have a local microcenter near him. $205AUD is only $145 us for a 4590 and mobo, which is pretty good considering he has 16GB of ddr3 already.

If you plan on upgrading to a 4790(k) at any point then I would just save your money for a couple months and get an i5 8400, 9th gen equivalent, or r5 2600 with a cheaper mobo and ddr4. There's not much sense in buying the i5 if you're going to replace it again with old, overpriced hardware anyways (the perf/$ on the 4790k is pretty bad compared to new chips) and you can still get a decent amount of money for your 6300, mobo, and 16gb of ddr3.

Yes, but I would suggest saving up and buying everything you want the first time around. If you buy the 4590 and gtx 1060 only to sell them and spend more money on a 4790k and GTX 1070/1080, you're going to end up costing yourself additional time and money. It would make a lot more sense to just get an r6 2600 and used GTX 1070 (which are going for ~$380aud on gumtree atm) right off the bat. If you don't see yourself upgrading for a while and are only playing at 1080p, then the 4590 and GTX 1060 present a good value option.
