Hi. Is the i5 4670 idle temps @ 45c? high or normal?

I am using the stock cooler and i just installed it. No OS or drivers for anything installed but i went into the bios settings and it hangs around the 40-46 mark.

I know that haswell chips run hot but is this normal?

Micro ATX case
gtx 260 with twin fans (heatsink on this is cold)
Stock cooler with the pre-applied thermal paste.
stock frequency (3.4ghz)

If this is too high, should i just change the thermal paste with something else? Dont want to spend extra on cpu cooler unless I need to and defiantly do not want to delid this thing.

No OC'g will be done and the main use of this will be for WoW.

Well, just for a comparison - I'm looking at my CPU (which is basically the same as yours) with 5% load atm - the temps are 32-34.

I am using Freezer I30 which is a relatively cheap cooler. I hear that stock coolers are abysmal, so maybe that's that.

I don't remember, but I think my BIOS temp is 29-30.

I think buying a cheap 20-30$ cooler will be the best solution really, since apparently even the cheap coolers are leagues above the stock crap.

I will run a stress test once I have windows installed (having to make a bootable usb as i don't have a dvd drive!)

I was quite shocked when i saw the temps as my old athlon x2 its replaced was about 30 degrees under heavy load. (saying that i had a heatsink so big it touches the case!)

I've built many i5-4670 mATX builds for HTPCs and never had an issue using the stock cooler (just insure that it is firmly attached -- that connector system is poor IMO).

The key with such a small case is very good airflow and you may need to add a case fan if you have space.

Your CPU can only get cooled with the ambient air and that will be quite hot if the wiring and other obstructions prevent good case airflow. If you put that 4670 into a full tower, it would drop into the 30s easily just due to the better ambient temp.
