So I built my computer in 2013 and I guess I overclocked it a long time ago based off a YouTube video I watched with no real understanding of what effected overclocking. Got the CPU to 4.6 at something like 1.9 volts and left it like that for a long time.... Recently I was interested in overclocking (Didn't remember I had already overclocked my CPU), and realized it was already overclocked, but very high volts.

I have downed my volts down to 1.22 stable at 4.6Ghz but my idle cpu temps (with a Corsair H110i) are averaging 40c. I remember my temps at idle being in the 3x with a volt of 1.9x... I know that shouldn't make sense, and honestly I could be wrong...

I guess im wondering if my cooling (dust, fans, etc) is hindering my cooling? I feel like after I downed the volts so much I should see a cooler idle temp.

*Edited my volts because they where all off and added bios screenshots.

<mod edit> man you almost gave me aheartattack when you said 2.9volts LOL! My god!
yes you need to make sure your system is dust free. It insulates heat very nicely ;) So basically ... get :
compressed air: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00EQ8C82K?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00
anti static brush: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B009N804E2?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00
i use both of these personally, the brush allows you to clean components and get right into heatsinks with precision like you never imagined ... make sure you got atlkeast 1 intake preferbly 2 and an exhaust fan and that they are clean, and if you have dust filters ... clean them too :)
You'll notice so much more performance from it. Have you also reapplied the thermal paste? That will help alot too.

What in the? You shouldn't even have the voltage higher than 1.3-1.4 volts at the most. 1.5+ volts for extreme overclocking with LN2.

You obviously never did stability/stress testing, as with that kind of voltage your chip would have instantly started thermal throttling. I am completely surprised the chip is not dead.

Are you serious? 2.9 Vcore? Even 2.15 is far too high. It should be 1.5V MAX! And even with that some people would call you bonkers.
Maybe its damaged already, yet I dont even know if there is one mainboard that even offers 2.9V in the settings. Are you sure youre talking about the Vcore?

Okay so obviously my volts where way off lol. Previously, when the setup was new, it ran at 1.9v (Was like this for awhile probably a year or more) and this week I knocked it down to 1.25v. Just now (Restarted to check I wasn't at something crazy like 2.xx like I posted) I knocked it down from 1.25 (I had run prime95 for about 10 hours and it seemed stable at 1.25) to 1.22 and my temps seem to be higher? On reboot they where at 52c and seem to be jumping around 40c and 46c.

I plan to clean the dust out thoroughly, but not today... I cleaned my Corsair 600T's mesh filters but don't have time to disassemble and do in the garage.

Figured I would make sure its not a bios issue first. Right now it is running at 41-44c but it spikes in the 48c sometimes. I just remember low 30's in the past.

Those pictures do not show the section with the power saving features.
Download CPU-Z, start it and let the computer idle for up to 2 minutes. See if the frequency goes down or stays at 4.6 GHz.

The Core speed is staying at 4.6MHz give or take a few (Not getting lower that 45xx.xx). Dropped it down to 1.210 stable. Im not sure how I can change the setting for power saving in bios if it was not those pictures of my Bios management?

What are you using to test for stability?

What are you using to monitor temperatures?

Have you even read any guides on overclocking Haswell CPUs?

Do you have Windows Power Options set to "Balanced"?
If not, i suggest doing so.

Prime95 overnight primarily. I have AIDA64 as well but don't use it for as long.

Core Temp is on my bar, but I have CPUZ and

Watched some videos and skimmed through some guides.

Windows power options are balanced.

Sorry I didnt reply sooner. Had a busy week.

Check the BIOS for C-state settings and other power saving stuff (use Google if youre not sure). Turn them all on auto. If that doesnt help, switch them to on one at a time, check if the clock drops after 2 mins in idle, if not, turn on the next one until all are on or your clock drops. Also be sure no program is running that uses the CPU a lot, because the clock wont drop then for obvious reasons.

However, it might very well be that they will interfere with your overclocking efforts. Many times turning these on will lower overclocking results. So you may have to decide if you want a little lower overclocking and lower power draw or a power hog in idle.

This is also ultimately the reason why I suspect they were deactivated.
