Hello everyone,

So I have had this cpu for about a month and I watched many videos and read several guides and decided to try overclock my cpu to a modest everyday usable speed, something in the 4.2-4.4 range max.

Based on default setting in CPU-Z my voltage seems to constantly be at 1.177. I ran intel burn test on very high for 10 loops and it passed, temps were in the 80's at 100% cpu load.

Now I went into my bios and began tweaking. I set my CPU ratio to 42x and CPU mode to dynamic. I set my cache/ring ratio to 40x. My voltage I started with 1.125 on adaptive mode and kept the cache voltage .025 below that also on adaptive mode. I booted fine but froze on the IBT.

Increased cpu voltage to 1.150 and I froze again on IBT. Now I increased it to 1.175, it doesn't seem to freeze but the temperature hits 95C! and I manually stop it at that point. My CPU-Z shows the core voltage as 1.177 during all tests.

Is there other tweaks I can try? Under default settings my CPU maxes at pretty much 55C and idles around 30-35C. Does the chip just happen to not be a good one?

I have an EVO 212+ cooler
Motherboard is a MSI z87-g45
PSU is Corsair CX750M

Thank you very much for your help!

the intel 4th gen CPUs are known to generally run hot but, it could also be possible that you used too much thermal paste or the mounting of the heatsink is too tight.

my buddy's 4770k @ 4.5 and 1.25v maxes out @ 95C-98C in 3dsmax and he's using a custom water loop... temperature wise, i'd say its the bad-end of the average side :/

I did a bit more tweaking with Intel Burn Test and my BIOS settings. I heard that on adaptive mode for voltage made certain stress test/benchmark software pull extra voltage than what you set (such as prime95). I didn't read anything about IBT but noticed it was actually pulling as much as 1.285V when I had it set around the 1.150 range which is most likely the cause for the heat.

Although it would seem my chip is average or below average. I am stable right now at 4.3GHz at 1.210 volts, with cache ratio at 4.00mhz at 1.70 volts, I can't seem to get my system stable at 4.4ghz even at 1.290 volts, I'd probably have to go to 1.3 or above which I wanted to avoid. I also can't seem to get the cache ratio above 4.00mhz, seems like when I set it to 4.10 with bumping the voltage by .020, I'll boot but cash within 5 minutes using intel extreme tuning's stress test.

But using tests such as the intel extreme tuning utility stress test or passmark's burn it test to stress the cpu my temps hover in the high 60's peaking every now and then to 72C.
