Hi guys,

I plan to buy an i5 4670K with Trident X (2x4Gb) 2400MHz and a Z87 model motherboard on it. I want to work this RAM at full speed (2400)! I know that i can do it via XMP profile but the question is...
Need to OverClock my CPU in order to succeed it?

I feel that i just make a noob question.. B-)

And if i need to OC my CPU what cooler you suggest me for this high profile RAM (Trident X)?
I prefer air cooler if is possible due to a limited budget..

Thanks in advance for any help..

Solution
Depends on your individual 4670K, some can others can't, if it is needed can prob just set the CPU multiplier to 40 and that will be it, most will run fine at 4.0 with no voltage adjustments

Ok guys i understand that is useless and thanks for the help!!

But still in the case that someone wants in the future maybe to try to work RAM at 2400 need to OC the CPU??
I just want to know...

Zac, The Trident X 2400 are at same price as 1600 so i think is value to get the higher even if it is useless.. :)

CTurbo, i plan to buy ASUS R9 270X, so i will not use the 4600..

Overclocking your cpu shouldn't have anything to do with memory speed capability unless you're overclocking via fsb which would overclock your memory as well. You need to make sure that both your motherboard AND the 4670k will support the 2400mhz speed even with xmp.

The motherboard supports up to 3050 so i don't worry for it. But i don't know about the CPU. This is the reason that i focus on it..
So to understand, if i ONLY choose the XMP profile to get the 2400 RAM speed, this doesn't affect the CPU temperature may be or anything else?
Sorry if i tire you.. :)

The timings on Trident X 2400 are 10-12-12

Know the sticks well, the Tridents are my model of choice (and recommendations), I have 32GB of each on two main rigs 2400/10 on my 3570K IB build and 2666/11 on my Haswell - but you were thinking correctly, too many people think that they can run any DRAM the mobo advertises when it's more dependent on the CPU and if IT can carry those freqs/sticks

Thank you all for your answers.

So the conclusion from your answers is:

1. Enable XMP profile from bios for 2400MHz and see if pc boots & works properly. if YES job DONE! If not..
2. Enable XMP profile again for 2400MHz AND set the CPU multiplier to 40. Normally will work fine at 4.0 without voltage adjust! If still not..
3. Repeat step 2 and do some minor voltage adjust & is highly recommented use after market cooler.

Is it worthwhile? I really dont know but i will give a try.. :p

Thanks again!

Hi. I have a 1866 RAM and i5 4670k at stock speed. In BIOS I saw my RAM speed is only at 1333mhz and I want it to run on 1866 but I saw in Intel website that the proci only supports 1333 and 1600. So it is not possible to increase my RAM to 1866?

if it helps, I had no problem with my I5-3570k and 2133 memory. o/c memory to 2400 with stock timings. No need to change CPU clock.

However, when I did o/c my CPU to 4.4GHz, it was more easily stable with lower memory clock of 1600 (but much tighter timing). I actually got a similar Maxxmem results as I did at 2400. The memory timing (of course) AND the CPU clock affect this test.
