I recently acquired 11 identical generic desktop computers in a liquidation. All of them work and have ASUS H81M-Plus motherboards with G3220 CPUs. I wanted to refurb them for basic office machines, so I ordered some used i5-4690 processors online. Prior to installation, I've updated the BIOS to the latest 2205 version. However, only some of the units will boot after the CPU upgrade (actually 2 out of the 5 so far.) The system powers up, but does not POST. If I put the G3220 back in they work fine. I'm stymied and could use some advice.
Here are some of the things I've tried/checked:
I put all 6 of the used i5-4690 CPUs into one of the working machines and they all test working properly. (So not a CPU issue.)
I have changed out the RAM for various sizes and speeds.
I have tested with 1 RAM chip in each of the slots.
I've reset the BIOS to factory settings.

Any suggestions?

Can you tell us what machines these are? I mean are they OEMs from Dell, HP, Acer, Gateway, etc., or are they custom built machines?

You may have already alluded to this above, but did you try the RAM from the working machines in the non-working machnes along with the known-working CPU?

I was unable to determine a brand or manufacturer. The Windows 7 license keys are OEM and there is no branding on the machines. The serial tag simply says "Made in Taiwan R.O.C." All parts are standard: ASUS H81M-Plus MB, Intel G3220 CPU, Kingston DDR3-1333 2GB RAM (X2). I have tried both CPUs with the shipped RAM and with other from my stock with no difference.

Before using the used i5-4690 Intel 4th Gen Core processors, Asus suggests that you first download the BIOS updater for new Intel 4th Gen Core Processors and then update the BIOS using this tool. Did you do that?

I tried installing that earlier and had all kinds of issues. I restarted the operation from scratch, but keep running into conflicts... The Update Tool must be run from within Windows and won't run without the Intel Management Interface Driver installed. It took a few tries to find a version that would install on this chipset, but even after successful installation the Update Tool doesn't recognize that IMID is installed and consequently won't run. Frankly, I thought flashing the BIOS would fix the issue, but apparently not. I've managed to get 5 machines of 9 running on the i5-4690 even without flashing the latest BIOS, but the others will not...yet. Still working on it, mostly because I hate unsolved mysteries!

Ok, after MUCH ado, and some advice from another post, I resolved the issue on at least one of the failed machines. Here's the scenario...
  • Flashed the BIOS to version 2205 via the onboard flash utility
  • Attempted to upgrade the CPU from a G3220 to an i5-4690...system started but would not POST
  • Installed Windows 10 Pro 64-Bit with the G3220
  • Installed Intel Management Interface Driver version 9 (version, it turns out, is vital for the Updater Tool)
  • Downloaded and ran the BIOS Updater Tool from ASUS and flashed the BIOS using the VERY SAME v2205 file I had used previously
  • Installed the i5-4690 and it booted properly
I don't understand why it is necessary to use the updater tool as opposed to flashing the BIOS directly, but apparently it matters, at least in some cases.

Had exactly the same problem with ASUS H81e-m and CPU upgrade i3 4130 -> i5 4690.
After some time finally managed to do it on Windows 10. Had to use Intel Management Interface driver V9.5.15 from ASUS website for Windows 7-8 under Windows 10. Installer complained at the end, but "BIOS updater" utility (also from ASUS website) finally started and was able to flash BIOS 3206. After that PC booted with i5-4690.
Before that all attempts with flashing various versions of BIOS from BIOS itself and from AI Suite software were useless. BIOS was updated, but CPU wasn't recognized. Only "BIOS updater" utility worked.
People say that "BIOS updater" utility also updates chipset and it is the key to get newer CPUs recognized. See comments under this video
