I see some new builds on pc part picker of people using i5 6500 and I was wondering why would I choose a 6500 over the 4690 when they are relatively the same

Solution
The 4690 uses an old end of life socket and DDR3. By using a 6500 you should have future upgrade options, with the 4690 your only upgrade option will be to start again as you will need a motherboard with the new socket and you will want DDR4

Buy the cheaper.Core i5 6500 maybe seems like a better deal(new cpus coming on the same socket) but in general most users upgrade when their existing systems are old and the socket obsolete. So my opinion is to buy anything comes cheaper and use the extra money on other components like gpu if you want to game on your pc.

The big 'gotcha' with the 6500 over the 4690 (if it's something that matters to you) is that Microsoft is cutting short support for Windows 7 and 8.1 on Skylake machines except on a very short list of approved prebuilt systems. So if you're not a Windows 10 fan and don't plan to upgrade the CPU before you replace the machine, then you'd likely want the 4690. But if you're happy with Windows 10 then there's not much reason not to go with the 6500.

The i5 6500 is a pretty powerful lil beast! I built my wife an i5 6500 machine on a z170 mobo (yeah, I know people are gonna rag on me for not getting the 6600k), but I'm into tinkering etc.. and the non k chips can be oc'd on some z170 boards. That's neither here, nor there. I'll experiment with that later, but for now I have her set at stock settings. I have a 4690k on an Asus Z97a motherboard and hers is an Asus Z170a, I have my 4690k oc'd to 4.5GHz, her 6500 is at stock settings and there is virtually no difference at all in gaming fps!
