Hey all. I currently have about £500 to spend to upgrade my pc the reason i am here is to ask on your opinions in which way i should go?

I currently have the following

I5-4690k (overclocked to 4.2ghz on h100i)
Gigabyte z97 d3h mobo (i think)
8gb of ram @ 1600mhz DDR3
Gtx 1060 6gb (gigbayte oc edition)
Samsung 850 evo 256 (games)
Samsung 840 pro 128 (OS)
500gb HDD for usual crap & files
Corsair RM750 PSU

I use this pc for gaming @ 1080p 60hz currently

Ive been looking at doing the big job of upgrading CPU,MOBO,RAM - i can do an i5-8600k with new mobo and 16gb of ram (DDR4) as im not likely to have this sort of money again for a while and cannot upgrade these components a bit at a time.

Ive also been looking at a new gfx card but with the current market the prices are crazy high

With the money i would get from my old components i would buy a new SSD

The reason i am.here is to ask your opinion the best way i should spend this money. The only i7 i could possibly afford currently is the 7700k but feel an 8600k would be a better choice and be more "future proof"

Do i even need the 8600k or will the 8400 do me fine with the lower clock speeds?

I apreciated i do not game at crazy resolutions or refresh rates but want the smoothest gaming experience i can get

Do i take the plunge on the graphics card prices and get a 1070/1080? Is it worth upgrading to a 6core i5 or do i sit and wait and see if either the graphics card prices drop or to see what thr 9th gen of CPU's bring?

All comments apreciated

Thanks

Steve

If you take some time to look for used parts, you can easily find CPU for well under 200 pounds.
here is an example of one sold few days ago https://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Core-i7-4790K-4790K-4GHz-Quad-Core-BX80646I74790K-Processor/302703743545?epid=222768395&hash=item467a8c9239:g:BlYAAOSwKjha0Ie~
and it's not a problem to buy used CPU, it's either working or not and you have your money back guarantee by ebay/paypal.
right now, your system is kinda balanced. changing CPU or GPU (without monitor) would not change things significantly.
so unless there is something that the current HW can't do, there is no reason to do change anything.
on the other hand, you can get 4770K or 4790K for about 160 pounds (similar to 8600K perfromance), another 8GB of RAM for under 50, sell your i5 for 100, sell the 1060 for whatever it's going (probably something like 200+) and you have about 600 for a new GPU.

GFX card prices are dropping again so it's unlikely you could make a profit on that 1060 but close to msrp is expected. I look there because I have a 4690K and 8GB RAM. I faced a similar situation not too long ago. A bump from the 1060 to the 1070 wouldn't be even close to worth it. I had the 970 and a 1060 would be an upgrade but the 1070 would be a more significant boost and one worthy of the investment IF the 1070 were at its release price. I sorta went off the deep end and purchased a 1080 Ti. I'd NEVER spent more than about $329 on a GFX card and even that was painful. I had to save up.

Anyways, I don't recommend you take the plunge just yet. There are a few games that the 4690K gets pegged at 100% usage at 1440p. Only at 4K does the GFX card take up the slack enough to loosen the chains on the 4690K. That's fine with me for right now. I game at 1440p and have yet to meet those games but have seen a video over here where another member's 4690K was dancing with 100% in 1 game. It has about 2 years left under its belt before it's ready for the pasture.

I monitor my PC's resources with msi AB and have yet to use over 5.5GB of RAM so that isn't a problem for me either. I chose to stay with 8GB RAM.

As for you I wouldn't upgrade anything at this point. Research the next gen Intel CPU's when they are released. Nvidia's new cards won't be available until Oct.. That's when I would make your move to a better GFX card assuming prices don't get severely inflated again. The 1080 Ti from Nvidia was $699 for the basic model. The 2080 is rumored to be released at the same price. Rumors!!!:pfff:

Thanks for another great reply! I did look into the 4770k and 4790k as nonsense mentioned but they are still around the £350 mark new and £200 second hand. If the new line of cards is going to be released around the same price i feel i may aswell wait. I would imagine i would then have the issue of the CPU bottlenecking the card :(
