i5-4690k and a gtx 970 vs i5-6600k and a gtx 960?

Any recent generation i5 will do fine and performance is close among them. Overclocking is a waste of time, as Intel chips perform well already. Get the i5-6500 with an H170 motherboard and GTX 970 for great gaming. If you can fit the i5-6600 in your budget get it instead.

Any of the major board makers will be fine. Pick your favorite from Asus, Gigabyte, AsRock or Msi.
