So I'll be running a 1440p monitor which I primarily use for gaming as well as a lot of productivity. Will upgrading my i5 4690k make a huge difference anywhere in the general AAA gaming area.
I know games such as GTA V, Watchdogs 2 and other openworld games will be greatly affected but does it matter for all the generic AAA games?

Solution

Huge? Absolutely not. I've heard up to 15% depending on the game. For the money one has to put on the table for the CPU. board and RAM I'd certainly not go that route. The value would be very bad. For those with a disposable income, go ahead. For those who want the most for their money and want to make an informed decision, stay with the 4690K.

Single thread performance is about 5% better on 7700k.
I7 has HT while I5 has not.
Basically, you are wasting money.

If you want or need an cpu upgrade go directly to I7 8700k or I5 8600k.
If you can still live with 4690k, go upgrade the graphic card, if you want....although now is a bad time to buy any graphic card.

This answer was not researched in the past 5 minutes or even in the past 5 months. I've been where you are and have asked questions here, have searched past questions regarding the 4690K. I don't have that disposable income so I had to save money and be as certain as possible that each dollar I was investing returned the most possible. It took 9 months to save and during that time the EVGA 1080 Ti FTW3 Hybrid was released. Beast? Yes it is.

Thank you very much, I completely agree. With such minimal impact I will just stay with the i5 4690k. The only reason I really wanted to change it was because I get annoyed in large open world games such as Watch Dogs 2 & GTA V but it really isn't worth it. :D
