Which CPU is better for Battlefield 4, Just Cause 3, and games in general? I have been wondering whether an 8 core or a 4 core is better. And is it worth the extra $60?

Solution
You have to go back to the Athlon/Phenom days to have an AMD processor be competitive in gaming horsepower to an Intel processor. Zen might change that, but we won't find out for a while.

The Intel horsepower difference is enough that you will likely be able to increase the graphics settings and still have the same performance as the AMD (or even better).

It is most definitely worth it.
for gaming the i5 wins by a decent amount as its per core power is superior and gaming only uses four cores. if you want to record while playing or surf google chrome and game ( not sure how) then the octacore is a better idea as you have more cores to throw at other programs.

absolutely true but a i5 4690k will not struggle on those applications much more the the fx cpu. the only application i could think of that would need the 8 core fx was running more than 4 vms. other then that the performance increase you will get from gaming will be larger then the performance decrease on the 8 threaded applications.

yes i believe the performance increase for the i5 will be enough to justify the $60
