i5 4690k vs i7 4790k

Hi,

I'm building my first gaming PC, and I'm looking at the final piece of the puzzle, the CPU. I'm not sure if the i7 is worth the extra bucks, or if the i5 will do me just fine. The key pieces are:

MSI GeForce GTX 970 OC 4G Gaming
ASUS Z97-A Motherboard


Future-proofing is semi-important; I don't want to have to worry about upgrading too soon, ideally within 4-5 years at the soonest. I know it's hard to say what is future proof, but is the extra $$$ worth dishing out for the i7, or is it fine just sticking with the i5?

I have had both. There isn't much gaming difference from my experience between the two processors. The i7 has a higher stock clock speed out-of-the-box and may or may not be able to get a higher OC. I haven't tried to OC my i7 yet.
Unless games become severely more multi-threaded, there's not much the i7 can improve on over the i5. With that kind of IPC, it's really all about the gfx card unless you plan on SLI or CF.

for gaming, I don't see the point of getting the i7. the i5 is more than enough for games.

I have a question for you. why not skylake?

Do not buy a new CPU on the Hasswell platform, move over to Skylake, as I understand it you allready have a GTX 970 and a Mainboard or are you planning to buy? If you haven't here are some part's you should buy:

The 6600K has the same gaming performance as the 4790K allmost. If you don't have the money to buy a new skylake board or don't want to upgrade from Hasswell for some reason buy the i5 4690K it's the best for gaming and has a bigger price to performance ratio then the i7. Really you don't need an i7 for gaming.
