i have an:
ASUS h81m-k mobo
16gb ram
i3- 4130 currently
gpu: currently taken out but in process of upgrading to better one

everything works with how it is now, but it wont post when i put the i5-4690k in. i have the latest bios. i did my research and made sure it is compatible with my current setup. Reseted CMOS. unplugged everything but mobo power, processor power inside the tower.
every time i try i just get a black screen, fans are running, green light going where it suppose to be. mouse and keyboard do now power on.

EDIT: sent off new processor because intel thought it was defective. received new i5, did same thing. so it wasnt the processor that was the problem.

the new i5 did same as before. so it wasnt my cpu that was the problem. but i finally figured out.

I had to downgrade my MEI and chipset versions, then it allowed me to windows bios flash 1103. then it worked.

Certain H81 motherboards that were manufactured before September 2014 may need a new bios chip to accept Haswell-Refresh CPUs.

If I can be honest, since you bought an unlocked processor, I would recommend upgrading to a newer Z97 motherboard, which will allow for much easier and more stable overclocking abilities. Right now your Motherboard won't give you as much range as you could get, if any. I know spending more money isn't fun, but in your case, this investment would be very beneficial.

i am going get a new motherboard soon but at the moment i cant. i don't plan on really over clocking it until then. why would it need a new bios chip? first i've heard of this

I retract what I said, Asus was not one of the concerned manufacturers. Asus' H81 chipsets with the latest bios update should be capable of running an I5-4690k. Are you certain that your motherboard really is running the latest bios update? I know you probably checked a billion times, but it's such a common mistake that I have to ask. Verify that your Bios version is at least 0805, that's how you'll know. The H81 chipset isn't really built for Higher-end i5s or I7s. It won't allow you to use many functions that Intel developed for their i5 or i7 CPUs.

I would strongly suggest that you wait until you receive your new motherboard before trying to use the i5-4690k. The i3-4130 is still a good processor and won't bottleneck your current GPU anyway.

gpu: currently taken out but in process of upgrading to better one
I would change the motherboard before you change your GPU, as your H81 just doesn't cut it when it comes to performance computing.

my current bios is 1103. i already have the replacement gpu lol. the current one i have is a xfx R 7800 series.

http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/H81MK/HelpDesk_Download/ this is where i got my updates. i am all for changing mother boards. lol i was going to sell old processor and cpu to buy new mobo. buttttttttttt my problem is i cant sell it if i cant get this i5 to work

I understand that. According to Asus themselves, all their H81 chipsets are compatible with haswell-refresh CPUs. It bothers me, because I've seen other threads talk about different H81s have issues with H-R. Look if you could find the version 0805, the one they say was going to allow the new "k" CPUs

Will it hurt my mobo going down in number for bios?

i will say i just updated my bios to latest assuming it will work. after i did that i saw this file:

Version 2.00.02
Description BIOS updater for New 4th Gen Intel Core Processors
Before using the new Intel 4th Gen Core processors, we suggest that you first download the BIOS updater for new Intel 4th Gen Core Processors and then update the BIOS using this tool.
File Size 7.16 MBytesupdate 2014/02/28
Download from Global

downloaded it and when i try to use it, it just tells me: This tool is for BIOS update to support new Intel 4th gen core processors. Please ensure that the Intel Management Engine Interface driver is properly installed before using this tool.

Then it just gives me the option of "No" , yes is greyed out.
does this have anything to go with it?

found this in utilities tab and installed it:

Version 11.0.0.1146
Description Intel(R) Management Engine Interface V11.0.0.1146 for Windows 10 32bit & 64bit.
File Size 61.19 MBytesupdate 2015/07/31
Download from Global

it is still greyed out after this

went to the ASUS site, searched my mother board. driver and tools tab. expanded BIOS. downloaded Latest bios. put on Flash drive.
restarted and got into bios menu. went to tools and selected Flash tools option. found bios update, the updated it. I am on v. 1103 bios.

after restart i shut down computer. took it apart. did the CMOS reset. put new processor in. then nothing.

Are you certain the CMOS reset was performed properly? You might want to try again, since nothing else seems to work.

http://www.manualslib.com/manual/565354/Asus-H81m-K.html?page=19 this is how i reset it. i even took the little battery out as well

This thread has me confused like rarely before. You have followed the right steps and I can't think of anything more you could've done. I hate to do that, but I have to call it either defective or non-compatible, despite what Asus said.

One last thing. What is your current PSU?

antev vp450. im starting to think it might be the processor as well
edit: antec vp450**

Get in touch with intel's customer service and explain that you went through all the steps to make your motherboard compatible with the i5-4690k, but you can't get it to even reach the BIOS. The CPU is under a limited warranty that covers defective units.

i have put in a ticket with intel and have been waiting to hear from them
UPDATE: no email back from them, nothing on the support community forum as well

For processor support in North America, call 916-377-7000 between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Pacific time, Monday through Friday. For this kind of issue, I would recommend calling over emails.

thanks. calling them was next thing i was going to do. ill update here to let whats going on.

Hello Elia_M,
Please first compare Core i3-4130 with Core I5-4690k, where the latter lacks of the support of ECC memory module! So you'd better make sure that your memory module is not ECC one, and disable ECC function under SETUP/BIOS/UEFI. Both of mentioned processors are supported by ASUS H81M-K, but you'd better update your firmware up to the latest (1103). Further information on configuration of BIOS, please refer to its user manual. I just wish you good luck!

Best Regards,
Aaron Janagewen

this is what they told me on Intel forum. can you help me understand how this will affect processor and or if it will affect processor not POST
UPDATE: after some research. my mother board does not support ECC and there for does not have an option to enable or disable. my ram is non ecc as well.

That answer doesn't help you. When you did the CMOS reset and installed the new CPU, the motherboard would've automatically disabled ECC anyway. You would've had maybe 1 automatic reboot, but it would've worked. Also, your version of the BIOS is the right one and the post also states that your motherboard is compatible. For those reasons, I think your I5-4690k is a defective unit. Personally, I've never had to return a CPU to Intel, so I can only wish that it isn't too complex, after all you went through. Sorry I couldn't help you more than that. 🙁

Good luck

i will update when i get new processor in. i am sending back the i5.
thank you for all your help

the new i5 did same as before. so it wasnt my cpu that was the problem. but i finally figured out.
