i5 6400 lifespan

I am getting a PC and I would like to know if the i5 6400 paired with a top of the line GTX 1070 would last 5 years for gaming. Now I would upgrade the GPU and add RAM when necessary, but my main question is the CPU lasting 5 years?

Depends on what your expectations are. There are already games in which the i5 6400 will dip well below 60fps.

But if I paired it with a GTX 1060 wouldn't it be fine for 60fps 1080p ultra

It all depends on the game and the detail settings. You get what you pay for. Overall, I prefer the 6500 for the higher clocks and only a few dollars more.

If a CPU can't stay above 60, it can't stay above 60 regardless of what video card you have. CPU needs of games are basically fixed values that are largely unaffected by graphical settings.

That said, I personally don't play many AAA games, and I don't mind dips into the 50's or even upper 40's.

Higher end CPUs exist because they perform better. You largely get what you pay for.
