I5-6400 or r5 1400 ?

Well, as the titles says I want to upgrade my computer but I'm not sure which CPU to buy. My GPU is a gtx 1500ti.

I would go with the i5 unless your computer lives in video, audio, and picture editing programs that are able to take full advantage of SMT. (even then I may still pick the i5, depending on the price of the other components)

I heard that I would need to update the motherboard first to use a 7th generation and I don't have any other CPU to do that.

If you already have the Intel motherboard, then why are you considering an AMD CPU?
