I have an i5-6400 @2.7GHz but it boosts to 3.2GHz. Ive noticed some stuttering in games here and there and don't know if its actually the CPU. I have a GTX1060 6GB card and that is plenty for all the games that i know of. Is it time for an upgrade or am i better off just tweaking the settings or looking at other components? I'm also playing at 1080p. Thanks!

Hardware:

  • i5-6400 with Hyper T2 Cooler
    GTX1060
    8GB HyperX DDR4 ram
    2x1TB HDD no SSDs

Solution
It will depend on the game. For CPU heave games, then having 8 threads can be beneficial. So for example, BF1 is a CPU heavy game that the 6400 will struggle with. Take a look at the PC requirements for the games you play. If a lot of the recommended requirements are i7's, then your 6400 may be holding you back. If they are i5's, then there wont be much of a difference.

If you want to upgrade, look for a good deal on a used 6700 as it is an excellent CPU that will meet the minimum requirement of every game on the market for several years to come.
