I want to upgrade my i5 6500 to i5 7600k and i want to know if it's worth it because initially i wanted to buy a 8th Intel generation Coffee Lake but i have an Asus z170 pro so i need to buy a new motherboard aswell but i'm not sure if i wanna spend 250 $ + more money on a new motherboard

Dont upgrade to older gen. you will not notice much difference .

remember that the 8th Gen i3 8350k is equal to the i5 7600K

and the i3 8350K is only $170

so why go with older gen ?

the new i3 8350k is 4 cores just like the older i5 , and is overclckable

and the newer i5 are 6 cores...

so if you want to upgrade go for the newer 8th GEN

Except that the OP will need a new motherboard and possibly a new copy of Windows to go with that CPU. That's an expensive "upgrade".

An i7-6700 will provide all the performance the OP will likely need for years. Even more so if they get a 6700K.

He can save $100 by going i3 and still get the same performance of the older gen i5 ... and put that on the motherboard.

later on he will be able to upgrade ti i7 8700K as he wishes and sell the i3 ..

upgrading to 4 cores i7 today is not a good idea .. better either he upgrades to Gen8 or keep his pc as is until the right time comes for his big upgrade.

But what's the point? The "upgrade" is still a quad-core CPU that isn't going to offer any noticeable improvement. The OP is throwing their money away.

Or he could take an i7-6700 right now.

But you've recommended that the OP upgrades to an i3-8350K?!

Again, the OP can upgrade to an i7 right now and be done with it. No new motherboard, no second copy of Windows, no mucking about selling old parts. Not only is it the easiest option, it's also the cheapest.

The move to 6 cores i7 will make huge difference in the future for both Gaming and productivity.

any ways I differ with you and I see getting 4 cores i7 is a mistake today.

Better keep his system for now and not upgrade if money is an issue. or get the i3 8350K and enjoy it until he can get the i7 8700K.

it is up to him to decide . lets wait for him to come.

Indeed, let's wait and see.

In the meantime, here's the cost of "upgrading" to an i3-8350K:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel - Core i3-8350K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor ($199.89 @ B&H)
CPU Cooler: CRYORIG - H7 49.0 CFM CPU Cooler ($34.89 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: MSI - Z370-A PRO ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($99.99 @ Newegg)
Operating System: Microsoft - Windows 10 Home OEM 64-bit ($89.89 @ OutletPC)
Total: $424.66
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

This has the cheapest Z370 motherboard available on PCPartPicker right now. Add another $400 for the i7-8700K at current prices.

Here's the i7-6700:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel - Core i7-6700 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor ($269.99 @ Amazon)
Total: $269.99
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

Add another $40 or so for the i7-6700K.

yea right adding Windows 10 into the equation. dont worry much 99% of the time the key worked for me on different motherboards. even different systems.

and you are trying your luck lol .. that price is rare to find .. it is $320 normal price. you just happened to find a special offer at $269 lol.

anyways ...

Why is adding Windows 10 into the equation an issue? Sure, the current installation may reactivate, but it also may not. If it's budgeted for, there are no nasty surprises later.

Special offer or not, that's the current price and that's all that matters. Out of the six merchants on PCPartPicker, five of them are selling the i7-6700 for less than $320. They want to get rid of their stock.

Anyways...

adding win 10 is an issue because you want to make my idea look more expensive. you did not even bother to ask if his Win10 is OEM or Full. OEM will reactivate 99% and Full Version will 100% reactivate.

also the OP wants an overclockable CPU. and said he wanted to buy the 8th Generation and I gave him a solution for what he asked for.

you insist on your i7 6700 fine by me it is your opinion , but there is no need for all this argument to prove your idea is better than mine. just wait and see what the OP chooses .. no need to argue about this like that. he will decide. and you can have the best answer . hey OP give him the best answer regardless lol

Disregarding a new copy of Windows, your idea is still more expensive.

The OP said he wanted to upgrade to Coffee Lake but also isn't sure about spending more than $250 doing so.

The OP never said they wanted an unlocked CPU.

I'm not arguing with you, I'm pointing out the flaws in your suggestion so the OP can make an informed decision. At any rate, I'm done here. There's nothing I can say that I've not said already.

Thanks all for the help and opinions but i'm probably gonna buy an i7 7700k, i don't wanna spend more money and all the hassle with a new motherboard, windows etc and + I want to buy another SSD so that's gonna be some money :). One more question folks if you can help, i have an SSD 850 EVO 256 GB ( Asus Z170 Pro motherboard ) and i wanna buy another SSD because i need more space, probably around 500 GB, any recommendations ?
