So a friend of mine told me that since Kaby Lake is releasing soon I should get an i3 7350k over an i5 6500 for gaming. I'm building a new PC for my younger brother and he has every part except the CPU because no store in Adelaide Australia has i5's at around Christmas time.

He also said that since the 7350k is apparently 2 cores and 4 threads, "games can't tell the difference between cores and threads". Since the i3 has a higher clock speed and 4 threads but is cheaper, he thinks I should get that and use the left over money for an aftermarket air cooler and then overclock the CPU to gain better performance. It's already at 3.7GHz, but the i5 is only 3.2Ghz and has 4 physical cores.

What should I do? It's a choice between either of those CPUs.

Thanks

Some games can detect hyperthreaded vs. physical cores and won't run without four physical cores present. I think Far Cry 4 or Primal is an example. Either way, there is a detectable difference, and there also is a significant performance difference. A physical core will always beat a virtual core. So if you can afford it, I see no reason to not go i5.
