Question i5 6600k always at 100% when gaming

So today i loaded up destiny 2 for the first time, after just having aquired a 5700 xt I was eager to the performance ingame, but was left dissapointed when the game kept stuttering due to what i assume is the cpus fault. When i checked task manager the cpu were running at 100% constantly. While my friend with a 1070 and a i5 7400 ran the game with no problem at all. I thought the 6600k was better or at least at the same level as the 7400, so how come my cpu stays at 100% while his breezes through it? The cpu is clocked at 3,9 ghz if that helps. So what i am wondering about is there any fix for this or what could be the problem? Im not running loads of background programs, only things such as discord, chrome, and programs for accessories such as razer synapse and corsair icue.

You've already turned up the graphics settings... and cut down on the background clutter.
Then this, is a simple cpu limitation. You now need a new cpu.

As it currently stands, playing the same game:
-I5 7400 + GTX 1070 is a better balance.
-I5 6600K + RX 5700XT is a bit lopsided.

The 6600k should be delivering smoother frame rates than the 7400 as long as you don't crank graphics details so high that the GPU becomes a worse bottleneck than the CPU is, so I'm suspecting there is a problem elsewhere. Single-channel RAM? Low RAM? Much slower RAM than your friend?

Best solution would be a CPU upgrade to an i7-6700k or 7700k, but you are better off buying a Ryzen 2600 for $120 and a decent motherboard for around $70-90 and reusing your ddr4 modules. A used 7700k is still over $200 and not much better than a R5 2600.

I only have 8gbs of ram on 2133 mhz, i built it back in 2016, maybe this is too little and too slow in 2019?

Ive looked into switching to ryzen, but if im first going to switch motherboard and the cpu I think id rather save up some money to buy an ryzen 5 3600.

I have thought about getting a new cpu, im thinking either getting a used 7700k or try to save up and switch to ryzen with a ryzen 5 3600. How much do you reckon ill get for my used i5 6600k?

To be honest, the 6600k is a 4 thread CPU that can get maxed out by today's demanding games, especially with a powerful GPU like an RX5700xt.

To help, you can turn up graphics settings. The real fix for this issue is a CPU upgrade.
Yeah, im guessing something like the i7 7700k or ryzen 5 3600 would be a lot better?

Its around 80-100 on 1440p

Is your ram made up of 1x 8gb? Dual channel memory setup would help cpu perform better but for now limit your fps to 60 and see how cpu usage is like then.

Cpu prepares frames for your gpu, if a game is quite cpu intensive in other areas, a high rate of frame pre-rendering can be too much for some cpus. Four core cpus nowadays are considered entry level and in today's games, are struggling to provide powerful gpus higher frame rates. Six cores are also struggling in some games.

For many games, 8GB is getting too tight for comfort. If you have a secondary monitor, you can put Task Manager on there and keep an eye on HDD/SSD activity. If you see high activity during slow-downs, then that is very likely to be your main problem and more RAM should make it considerably better.

While a 6600k may not be the ultimate gaming CPU anymore, it can still hold its own in the vast majority of games as long as it has everything else it needs to do so.

Destiny 2, at 1440p will be right around 100fps. That'll be a gpu limitation. At 1080p it'd be closer to 130+ fps, cpu limitation.

The cpu is dumping 130+ fps on the gpu, the gpu is what's limiting it to 100fps. Easy way to see that is drop the detail settings. If fps goes up, you are gpu bound. If fps goes nowhere, cpu bound.

There's many settings to graphics. The mistake many make is using auto settings like ultimate. There's very little difference visually to you between very high and ultimate, but a massive difference to the gpu.

Gun is up and aimed, Germans about to come crashing around the corner, things are about to get real dicey, real quick. Did you look at the stitching on your gloves? Notice the somewhat lack of shine and shading? No. Didn't look, notice or care. But thats the difference with ultimate over very high, it does care and has to stick in those 1000 extra little details. There's many settings you could lower to medium and never see the difference but the gpu will.

if you want a band-aid solution you can get a new 16GB kit of ram.

but you may consider what others have told you to upgrade, you could either go 7700k which is still a good CPU for gaming, or go for 3rd gen ryzen like the R5 3600/3600x. either of which are good pairs with the 5700 XT.
but the 7700k is getting sold at around 300-350USD brand new you are better off maybe getting a ryzen build instead.
buying used 7700k would still be a risk but is also an option.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600 3.6 GHz 6-Core Processor ($194.79 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: MSI B450 TOMAHAWK ATX AM4 Motherboard ($114.95 @ Amazon)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 Memory ($74.99 @ Amazon)
Total: $384.73
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

Sadly thats what happend with GPU like RX 5700XT and RTX 2600 and higher when paired with a 4 cores CPU, even at 1440p the CPU will still suffer in some games.

If you don''t mind, you could try to enable vsync on the game, this will cap FPS to 60, and it may help you a bit with the stuttering.

But, as other pointed out, youre gona have to face a CPU or CPU+MOBO+RAM upgrade.

core i7 7700K is still a god CPU today, but I wouldnt waste that amount of money on a CPU that only have 4 extra threads (no extra physical cores). Yes it will help for now, but you will run into bottleneck again soon.

Either Ryzen 5 3600 (3600X is somewhat watse of money, just get the 3600 and if you mind a new decent after market cooler like Artic Freezer 34 Sport Duo or Cooler Master Hyper 212 Black Edition) or the Ryzen 7 3700X.

Or you could wait till Intel launch the 10 Gen.

Its 2x4gb and ill try to limit it to 60fps and see how it goes

I was just thinking, you should download and run CPU-Z and check the SPD tab to find your memory brand and model. It might be a higher end model that you haven't changed the speed and timings on. Also, nobody asked, but are you running the game off an SSD or a HDD. Do you know the brand and model of your SSD or HDD?
