I'm getting myself an i5 6600k, was wondering if there would be any issue with that chip and SLI GTX 970 configuration? Really, would it bottleneck the SLI config?

I plan on overclocking once I get the hang of it, with the proper motherboard I've heard it's not that difficult.

And I chose the i5 after hearing people say an i7 wasn't really necessary for gaming, and the performance disparity between them is usually negligible. :)

It should handle it just fine, no need for the i7 unless using it for more than gaming :)

It will work really well with sli gtx 970's. I7 generally doesn't give any benefit, with the exception of some online games with large multiplayer maps, like bf4 64 player maps, where it can utilize the extra threads. If you had the money available, i'd probably spring for the i7, or even a xeon, or socket 2011 6 core i7 if the money is available. You will then find you wont have to upgrade your cpu for the next 5 years.

I don't know if I would necessarily agree with going X99 for gaming. That's sorta pointless, as gaming prefers faster cores as opposed to more. I think the i5 would be more than enough to run dual 970s. I wouldn't go the X99 route as it requires more expensive motherboards, more expensive processors, and higher TDP- for the little headroom other than in benchmarks and professional applications.

I don't have the budget for an i7. Previously I owned an i7 3770k, but I can't run SLI on the motherboard I have the i7 3770k installed on and I can't find a good motherboard for a decent price. I imagine I might actually see an increase in gaming performance with this new Skylake architecture, or I would hope. Just a slight bit.

Hopefully with an overclock I can really have fun with this chip. How long do you think this build will last?

I'd say you would be set for the next 3-4 years given how the Sandy Bridge i5s and i7s are still solid performers. However, only time will tell. In the meantime however, it should suit you well- especially with some light overclocking :)
