So I'm planning to build my first desktop pc next January, and I'm not sure about the cpu. In my country, the i7 6700k and the i7 4790k nearly cost the same, but getting the skylake means that I should buy a more expensive mobo and an expensive ddr4 RAM. Because I'm on a budget, I can't afford to get the i7 skylake.
I'll be using the pc mainly for gaming, and I know that the i5 is good for gaming now, but I heard that the new DX12 games will utilize the full power of the i7 ! So this means the i7 will get a big fps boost over the i5 (?)
Should I get the i7 4790k? Or is it a good idea to get the i5 skylake with a future proof motherboard ? (Speaking of which, will the LGA1151 socket support the next few intel cpu's ?)

You wouldn't necessarily have to buy an expensive motherboard and DDR4 RAM, there are more budget oriented Z170 chipset motherboards that support DDR3 and DDR3L, the other chipset motherboards should be out by January too. I would save up until January comes and then take a look then.

You may relatively safely assume that the "Lake" chips, Skylake, Kaby Lake, Cannonlake, will all be socket 1151.

If possible, I'd be getting Skylake if I could, even if I had to wait a little longer. Prices will come down for motherboards and RAM and if you aren't interested in overclocking, waiting for the other chipsets and the locked processors could allow you to afford Skylake and save some money.

Thank you all for responding. So most of you suggest to get the i5 skylake. But none of you talked about how the coming games will utilize the full power of the i7. Is this even a fact or a rumor ?

If you have to wait to afford the skylake cpu and board and the ddr4 by the time you could get the higher end system together something new is always around the corner.... You don't want to go to the lower end on parts because you may suffer from performance doing so. Right now you would be best to go with the I 7 4790K AND A REALLY good Gpu and don't worry about the lake Cpu there isn't a ton of data about them if you always have to have the lastet new products you always will pay a full price for them more then if they where out for some time .The i7 4790k would be far more then you will need for the nest 5 years or so we cant speculate about what games are going to do this or that but I am sure there isn't going to be ground break leaps and bounds from 2015 to 2020 when it comes to the games and hardware at current rate, Hope this helps...
