so the i5 6600k is on sale on newegg for $244. While i5 7600 non k is $289 on another site
I can get a Z mobo for $120 or B mobo for $125

TL;DR: i5 6600k or i5 7600 non k if i5 6600k combo is $50 cheaper
In addition, I have a node 202 case, with a big shuriken 2 cpu cooler, would I be able to overclock anyways.

Also, what's the downside of getting a 6th gen intel instead of a 7th gen?

Between the two chips, there's negligible improvements outside of base/boost clocks.

The 6600K boosts to 3.9GHz, with the 7600 boosting to 4.1GHz.

So, in a full-sized case with appropriate cooling, you could OC the 6600K to 4.1 GHz fairly easily and negate any difference.
In a smaller case, limited airflow and a small air cooler - your OCing capabilities are going to be limited.

If it were me, I'd just pick up the 6600K + Z170 (or 270) board and save the $50.

Mostly the K now gives more MHz. , But in this case it does not. I think I would still rock the 6600k. You can OC to close to 5GHz. Over clocking with FSB doesn't net as much as the Multiplier.
