I'm planning to build a new mid-range budget gaming PC, but I'm not sure if I should get the i5-8400 or the i7-8700. My current plan is as follows:

CPU: i5-8400/i7-8700
MoBo: Gigabyte B360M Aorus Gaming 3
RAM: G.Skill Aegis 8GB DDR4 2666MHz x2
Graphics: Gigabyte GTX 1060 Gaming G1 6GB GDDR5
PSU: FSP Hydro 600W
SSD: WD M.2 Green 240GB
HDD: WD Caviar Blue 1TB SATA
Cooling: Cryorig H7 Quad Lumi
Case: Sharkoon Skiller SGC1
Monitor: Acer 24.5" KG251Q-TN

Any opinions on my build are welcome. Thanks in advance.

Get the 8400. It is a great mid range gaming CPU. The 8700k gets about 3% higher fps in games than the 8400 but it cost almost 50% more.

Both of those CPUs come with a stock cooler and are locked chips. So you wont need the Cryorig H7. Definitely not for the 8400. If you do go with the 8700, they try the stock cooler and see how it does. If you temps are high, then you can get the cooler then.

I would also consider the RX580 8gb to pair with that monitor. The 580's pricing have gone down close the the 1060 and the performance of the 580 and 1060 are almost identical. The monitor has freesycn which the 580 can take advantage of. So if all things are equal, take the free sync.

Something else to consider would be a 144hz monitor. Honestly, I dont think I would buy a gaming monitor that was not 144hz. Here is a decent budget 144hz monitor.

The GPU is the most important component for a gaming rig. So you really want to spend you money there. GPUs show their age much quicker than CPUs. The 4770k released in 13 and is still a great gaming CPU. The GTX 970 released in 2014 and struggles to play games at high settings. I would consider using the money saved on the CPU and go for a 1070. It will have more longevity. But if you go with a 1070, you really need to get a 144hz monitor or your monitor will become the bottleneck.
