i still can't decide which one to choose. My rig will only be for GAMING 100%. No streaming, editing and all that. I managed to find a price where the i5 8400 and ryzen 2 2600 cost the same. Will the extra cores and threads benefit for just gaming?

Ryzen will give you about 5-7% less fps than intel, but with very low cpu usage. Intel will give you a little more fps but with very very high cpu usage. Ryzen mobo will support 3rd or maybe even 4th gen ryzen cpu. Both cpu's are good, u wont regret if you buy them. If you want to game at higher resolution, i think ryzen is better option since there is almost no difference at high resolution. Now it is up to you to decide.

Honestly these two cpus are pretty close when it comes to gaming. You would most likely have to turn the resolution way down to see a bottlekneck from either anyway. The best thing to do would be to watch some in game bench marks and see which preforms better in the games you are most likely to play, which ever goes on sale first, or which company you would rather support.

Assuming 1080p gaming, and just gaming, I'd get the Intel. Then it's all about the videocard you choose. If you have larger ambitions, like future 4k gaming, then you should be looking at higher end CPUs and videocards. It's going to be a long time until that i5 6 core isn't good enough to simply play a game.
