hey i was looking at these budget cpus and the 6c/t cpu came up alot in my searches. should i invest into this if i play esports titles at 1080p, or what else should i look for cheap?

Depends on what sort of esports titles you want to tax the processor/GPU/ram combo with. It should be fine at 1080p but not for high refresh rate gaming.

what else should i look for cheap?
Define what your understanding of cheap is? We will also need to know what you're planning on purchasing since a processor and GPU are merely two parts in a system that needs at least 5 more parts, considering you'll need a motherboard, ram(kit), PSU, storage and a case(if we stick to the stock cooler).

im paring it with 16 gigs of ddr4 and an old nzxt i had on hand. other parts are a samsung 850 evo 250gb and possibly a 1tb hdd for more storage, stock cooler. i was planing on playing apex, fortnite, rocket league, etc. my cpu budget is 70 and under depending on how cheap i can find the 580.

NZXT have a number of cases in their product portfolio, both old and new. You have to be specific than that to help us understand your clearances.

Regardless, the RX580 would be up your alley if your PSU is reliably built and can output 550W of power tot he entire system(not to be confused with the stickered info on a PSU, since an old unit will not output the same power after years of service and (stress)taxation.

TBH, I would consider looking at much newer i3 series and motherboards. The 8400 is great for general productivity and such. We have one in use here in the office. Where I feel like it would probably do 'ok' for the games you list, there is no clear and inexpensive upgrade path as well as the fact that motherboard selection will be picked through.

the motherboard i was looking at supports the i9 9900k

Sure, but have you priced the 9900K? It is priced beyond its worth IMO.

Try checking around on a i3 12100 platform. In a similar vein as above the 10th gen i3 offering will leave a wanting update path this late after release but would be a better alt IMO than 8 or 9th gen.

I was hoping it would decrease in price by the time im ready to upgrade, plus if i do the i3 12100, that would break my budget (especially the motherboards)
