Which cpu should i pair with my GTX 1070 to have 80+ fps on my 2560x1080 monitor? The i5 8400 or the r5 1600(x) one? and which one will last me longer?

Solution
Both will do what your asking and will be a massive improvement over your current CPU. Since the 8400 has better performance per core then it will probably be the better choice for gaming.

The processors you've listed are of two competing platforms. One is by AMD and the other is by Intel so the processors would not be drop in options on either platform boards. Provided you are on an Intel Z370 chipset board, the i5-8400 is the route to go. If you want to go for the R5-1600x then you're going to need a B350 chipset board.

That being said, I'd side with the i5-8400 provided your PSU is capable of delivering the necessary power to the entire system.

Longevity wise I'd actually go with the 1600 (Non X as you need to buy a aftermarket cooler and the 1600 can be overclocked to near 1600X levels) since AMD is sticking with the AM4 socket until 2020. Plus if you stream/broadcast the programs should benefit from the extra threads. Also considering there's no budget boards for Coffeelake it will be considerably cheaper going with Ryzen paired with a B350 motherboard.

My current rig is: GTX 1070 Asus Rog Strix, Evga 650w G2, Liquid Freezer 240, Samsung 850 Evo 250GB, Phanteks Pro M and the monitor is the LG 29UM68 oced to 80hz. Cpu-mobo-ram i have from my old rig, its FX 6300 - MSI 970 and 8GB ram. So i need to upgrade because i always delayed, since January when i started to build, to see the new cpus coming out and they suggested me one of these two cpus. What i want is 75-80+ fps on my monitor and last me the longest it can because i don't upgrade often.

The difference between the 2 sets is around 30 euros if i choose the 1600 and around the same money if i choose the 1600x, because i already have a watercooler.

Out of the box performance is easily the 8400 but once the 1600(x) is overclocked it will be fairly close and it becomes more of a personal preference. For me I don't really care to OC so my choice would be the 8400 but for someone that want's that ability and doesn't want to have to change the motherboard a few years later when they upgrade there CPU (if needed) then would want to consider the Ryzen lineup.

You think ryzen oced to 3.8 can push my games at 80+fps at my resolution or should i go with the 8400? Also you think ryzen has been mature enough to trust them or should i go with Intel which is the gamers choice?
