Hey tomshardware community,
I am planning to buy i5 8500 that runs at 2666mhz ram . If i use a 2400 mhz ram will it affect the clock speed of the cpu. Like i5 8500 can go upto 4.1ghz at max ,but if i use a 2400mhz ram will it go upto 4.1 ghz on boost or
not. When i was a kid i used to overclocked old 775 CPUs what i remember everytime i overclocked my CPU it overclocked the RAMs too. So , I'm wondering if cpu clock speed and ram speed are proportional.

Solution
Overclocking older gen's (ie; LGA 775, LGA 1366) using fsb or Bclk did increase memory speed. So if memory couldn't cope at higher MT/s rate you'd either get faster ram or dial back memory frequency.

These days it's different, both cpu and memory have separate multipliers. Can run any speed ram you want and cpu's overclock wont influence it.
