I have an option to buy either of these slightly used (i5-8600k & i5-6600k). I'm doing a budget build mainly for my woodworking business but letting the kids be able to play a few games on. Would you go for the 8600k at $175 or the 6600k at $140? I'm supposed to be picking up a GeForce 1050 Ti as well to go with it.

You could also argue, since you buy them used the 8600K probably is in better shape than the 6600K.
In addition if you wanted to know the 8600K is roughly 50% better if you accept this as a benchmark https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/Intel-i5-6600K-vs-Intel-i5-8600K/2570vs3100
So I would say go for it, better price for buck.

Just checking, I had a 6600K and it worked fine, put it in my GFs brothers build when I switched to Ryzen and works fine for them. If you can get a board for significantly less than an old Z1/270 then it’s worth it. If you’re spending an extra 35 on the chip and 50 on the board then probably not.

Both CPU's use the LGA1151 Socket, however the 8600K needs the V2 version of that Socket, meaning you either need a BIOS Upgrade or a V2 1151 MB. However these are not that much more Expensive if you are going for Medium Quality.

Actually I believe the 8600K requires the Z370/90 chipset as intel has locked it out for the Z1/270 chipsets. A BIOS update won’t solve this. You can get it to work if you want to mess around but guessing that’s not what the guy wants to do.
