I'm planning to build a z370 chipset system.

Gigabyte Aorus gaming 7
i5 8600k or i7 8700k ( Still haven't decided on which one to get)
g skill 16 gb ddr4 2400
evga GeForce 1080 ftw

Which cpu should I consider for gaming? If I overclock i5 won't that give me the performance just as good as i7?

Solution

No most people certainly do not. There are many people still using sandy bridge CPU's like the i7 2600k which is 6 years old at this point. The 2600k still does quite well in modern games and paired with the latest GPU's. I definitely plan on keeping my 7700k for more than two years.
They are both excellent CPU's for gaming. An overclocked 8700k and an overclocked 8600k paired with a 1080 ti perform within a few percent of each other in most games I have seen tested, with a 1080 they would likely be near identical especially if you have a high res monitor say 1440p+. I cant say how they will perform down the road however, the 8700k will likely stay relevant well into the future if you plan on staying on the Z370 platform for a while.

I did not imply that you ad a 1080 ti, nor did I say an i5 8600k wont last until 9th gen, of course it will and likely well beyond that. But like hellfire said the 8700k will last longer.

Yes but think about it are we really going to stay with a processor for 2 years cause we all have to upgrade to have the best equipment to run our games on

Only 10% to 15% of consumers do that. Rest are not as financially blessed.
